Artist Onelio Marrero lives just minutes from the New Jersey shore, where he and his wife enjoy long walks along the beach. In the quieter winter months, the shoreline often feels deserted, save for the ever-present surf fishermen. In this impressionist piece, Onelio captures the moment three fishermen cast their lines, one of them reeling in a small mako shark. The light and air shimmer across the scene, with reflections dancing in the runnels left by the receding tide.
About the Artist
Artist Onelio Marrero paints impressionist scenes that capture the romanticism of New York City or the soothing quiet of a rippling pond. His work evokes nostalgia and intimacy, giving the viewer a sense of having visited the same places before. “Each play of light, each texture, and each movement of a figure can have a captivating effect on me,†says Onelio. Living in New Jersey, he enjoys the luxury of having his favorite subjects to paint—whether it's the urban surroundings or the abundant nature just a short walk from his home. When he’s not painting, Onelio spends time with his grandchildren and immediate family, cultivates bonsai plants, and reads.

"Koi and Goldfish are considered lucky because, despite their bright colors attracting predators, they have useful survival instincts," shares Onelio. These fish take advantage of reflections of the sky and trees on the water's surface to hide from predators. Onelio capitalizes on the effects of the clear sky and silhouetted trees reflected on the pond to partially mask the exotic fish.

He captures the romanticism of New York City, from the picturesque fountains in Central Park to a glistening city street on a rainy afternoon. He creates a sense of nostalgia and intimacy with his work, offering the feeling that you have visited this particular scene before. “Each play of light, each texture, and each movement of a figure can have a captivating effect on me,†says Onelio. He studied at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art where he mastered discerning color and values, giving his work a more spontaneous appearance. Onelio’s work is an appreciation for beauty in all of its greatest forms; nature, art, and people.
