Paul Cornoyer, born in 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri, was an American Impressionist artist. Initially studying at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts under Halsey C. Ives, he began his artistic journey painting in a style reminiscent of the Barbizon School. His first exhibition took place in 1887, followed by further studies in Paris at the Académie Julian under notable instructors such as Jules Lefebre, Louis Blanc, and Benjamin Constant. Inspired by French Impressionism during his travels to Paris, London, and Venice, Cornoyer embraced a more fluid and tonal style, particularly evident in his landscapes and cityscapes. Returning to St. Louis in 1894, he painted a mural at the Planters Hotel, depicting the city's birth. Over the next six years, little is known about his work except for the creation of a significant triptych titled "A View of St. Louis," which became iconic for the city. Encouraged by the artist William Merritt Chase, Cornoyer moved to New York City in 1899, where he gained recognition for his urban cityscapes, particularly scenes after rainfall. Capturing the essence of city life with vivid depictions of streets, carriages, and towering buildings, Cornoyer's work became synonymous with New York's urban landscape. He also taught at the Mechanics Institute and mingled with prominent artists such as Childe Hassam and J. Alden Weir, expanding his artistic circle to include New England art schools. He was born in 1872 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of a railroad ticketing agent and a New Orleanian of Spanish and French extraction. He graduated from Cornell University in 1893 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and spent another year studying Architecture at the graduate level. He briefly worked at D. H. Burnham & Company and Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. before switching to education, With a degree in mechanical engineering and graduate degree in architecture, his career was centered among institutes of higher learning. Barker was also a skilled painter and a talented photographer. Barker specialized in waterfront, wharf, and beach scenes. The artist exhibited his work during the summer months at the Eagle’s Wing Studio on Union Street, having named the studio after a steamer, which had been captained by his grandfather. James Francis Barker (1872 – 10 December 1950) was the second president of the Rochester Athenæum and Mechanics Institute, succeeding Carleton B. Gibson, from 1916–1919. He also pursued painting, pottery, metal working, and cabinet making. A fine impressionist landscape of a winter stream by American artist Jonas Lie (1880-1940). Lie was born in Moss, Norway to an accomplished Norwegian engineer and an American mother. Named after his uncle, a novelist and close friend of Henrik Ibsen, Jonas went to Paris to live with his uncle in 1892, after his father's death. Surely it was here, the twelve year-old boy was influenced by the creative spirit found in his uncle's home. In 1893, Jonas moved to New York City, where he took evening classes at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League while working designing fabric patterns for a textile company to raise money to support his education. After the completion of his education, Lie spent most of his summers along the New England coast and Canada. Here he would paint bright, impressionistic harbor scenes and rocky, coastal views, which he would exhibit regularly.
