"The Depth of Night" - Seascape painting of crashing waves
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Steven Nederveen's art is a testament to the complex and ever-evolving relationship between humans and nature. His vivid nature scenes, often seemingly uplifting and idyllic, also reveal the darker aspects of our connection with the natural world. Through his work, Nederveen explores the dualities of our relationship with nature - the love and destruction that can coexist within us. His masterful use of color and light illuminates the beauty and mystery of natural environments such as oceans and...

Lake Mohonk by Hudson River Artist Nelson Augustus Moore (American, 1824-1902)
By Nelson Augustus Moore
Located in New York, NY
A rare depiction of Lake Mohonk, this painting by Hudson River School artist Nelson Augustus Moore (1824-1902) features Sky Top Tower and the serene natural surroundings of the historic Mohonk Mountain House. This 19th century oil painting on canvas measures 12 x 17.75 inches. The painting is signed and dated at the lower right, signed again and titled "Lake Mohonk" on the verso. The painting is framed is ready to hang. Nelson Augustus Moore was born on August 2, 1824, in Kensington, CT. His artistic studies began under the tutelage of Thomas Cummings and Daniel Huntington in New York City. After returning home to Connecticut, Moore taught drawing classes and also opened a photography business. He and his brother operated this daguerreotype studio in Hartford, CT until 1864 when Moore chose to return to landscape painting. His landscapes consisted mostly of New England subjects. He kept a studio in New York, painting in the same building as Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, James Hart and William Hart. Nelson Augustus Moore, while sharing in many ideologies with his contemporaries, felt no need to travel vast distances in search of grandiose and spectacular landscapes. He held a particular delight in the peaceful harmony of the local American countryside...

A painter, sculptor, writer, and teacher, John Weir was a highly talented man whose painting was overshadowed by his father, Robert Weir, the long-time West Point Academy drawing teacher, and his brother, J Alden Weir, well-known impressionist painter. His distinguished reputation was primarily based on his accomplishments as a teacher and administrator. For many years, from 1869 to 1913, John Weir was the Director of the Yale University School of Fine Arts. He was also a commissioner of the art exhibition at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Weir was born at West Point, New York, and by age 20, had a studio in New York City in the Tenth Street Studio Building, the first building in America dedicated to art studios, and there he associated with many leading painters of the day. "Sunset on Golden Marsh" Large Landscape with Pink/Orange Sky and Setting Sun
Located in Wellesley, MA
"Sunset on Golden Marsh," Oil on Canvas, 48 x 48 Inches is a majestic landscape painted with all the elegance and attention to detail of the best of the 19th century Hudson River artists. The warm glow of the top half of the canvas, pink and yellow light diffused through passing clouds, perfectly capturing the setting sun on a summer day is a dramatic foil to the lower half of the painting where meticulous rendering of the marsh's water and greenery is dreamy in the distance. This painting is beautifully framed in a simple light wood, high quality strip frame that accents the image perfectly without distraction. Additional photos of painting details and showing the painting installed on a wall can be provided. MacNeille is an unusually gifted painter of landscapes in general whose works are of the highest quality, always with careful attention to light and time of day. In addition to marsh scenes inspired by her local North Shore of Massachusetts area, she is a painter of beach scenes, water, and Niagara Falls. Watercolor of Natural Bridge, VA
Located in Fredericksburg, VA
Régis Francois Gignoux was a distinguished nineteenth-century artist whose work illuminated the sublime aspects of the American landscape. He was born in Lyon, France and trained at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where his instructor, the history painter Paul-Hipployte Delaroche, encouraged his interest in landscape painting. He traveled to the United States in 1840, and immediately showed interest in American Landscapes. He immediately settled in New York and painted many well known sites of the United States: Niagara Falls, the Catskill Mountains, Mount Washington, and Mammoth Cave, Kentucky. He is most famous for his winter scenes, but shows beautiful landscapes year round. Gignoux quickly established himself within the leading Hudson River School circles of the time. He took sketching trips with Frederic Church and John Frederick Kensett. Today, his paintings are in the collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the New York Historical Society, and the Georgia Museum of Art. This beautiful piece comes from the estate of the artist in New Jersey, and Meyer Fine Art...

Shop Abstract, Landscape, Figurative and Still-Life Paintings

Painting is an art form that has spanned innumerable cultures, with artists using the medium to tell stories, explore and communicate ideas and express themselves. To bring abstract, landscape and still-life paintings into your home is to celebrate and share in the long tradition of this discipline.

When we look at paintings, particularly those that originated in the past, we learn about history, other cultures and countries of the world. Like every other work of art, paintings — whether they are contemporary creations or works that were made during the 19th century — can often help us clearly see and understand the world around us in a meaningful and interesting way.

Cave walls were the canvases for what were arguably the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict natural scenery through art. Portrait paintings and drawings, which, along with sculpture, were how someone’s appearance was recorded prior to the advent of photography, are at least as old as Ancient Egypt. In the Netherlands, landscapes were a major theme for painters as early as the 1500s. Later, artists in Greece, Rome and elsewhere created vast wall paintings to decorate stately homes, churches and tombs. Today, creating a wall of art is a wonderful way to enhance your space, showcase beautiful pieces and tie an interior design together.

No matter your preference, whether you favor Post-Impressionist paintings, animal paintings, Surrealism, Pop art or another movement or specific period, arranging art on a blank wall allows you to evoke emotions in a room while also showing off your tastes and interests. A symmetrical wall arrangement may comprise a grid of four to six pieces or, for an odd number of works, a horizontal row. Asymmetrical arrangements, which may be small clusters of art or large, salon-style gallery walls, have a more collected and eclectic feel. Download the 1stDibs app, which includes a handy “View on Wall” feature that allows you to see how a particular artwork will look on a particular wall, and read about how to arrange wall art. And if you’re searching for the perfect palette for your interior design project, what better place to turn than to the art world’s masters of color?

On 1stDibs, you’ll find an expansive collection of paintings and other fine art for your home or office. Browse abstract paintings, portrait paintings, paintings by popular artists and more today.
