Anthony Benjamin
Anthony Benjamin (1931– 2002) FRSA, RE was an English painter, sculptor and printmaker. Benjamin studied with the best. In 1951 he worked in Paris under Fernand Léger and in 1959 he studied with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. Benjamin worked in Rome, St Ives, London, California and Calgary. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, UK In the 1950’s his work, inspired by the Cornish light, land and seascape, led him to a new understanding of tone and temper. Henry Moore and Peter Lanyon encouraged him, Francis Bacon gave him canvasses, and working within this rich atmosphere, Benjamin produced work which became more expansive, colourful and gradually more abstract in concept, sliding into Abstract Expressionism By the 1970’s Benjamin had started making sculptures that were more relevant to the exciting, modern, fast-moving transient world that was opening up at the time in London. He used modern materials, coloured plastic, fibreglass, polished metal, stainless steel and bronze. Intense glowing colour and reflections; amorphous and ambiguous shapes created works that crossed the conventional boundaries. Inspired by his close friendship with musician Brian Eno of Roxy Music, Benjamin started making series of Limited Edition silkscreen prints that used the same vibrant colours and similar shapes as the sculpture. Many from these series are in the Tate Collections in London. Benjamin’s first solo show in London was at the Institute of Contemporary Art in 1966. Following this he was quickly picked up by leading London Gallery Gimpel Fils. His work is held in major public and private collections around the world including Tate London, MoMA NY, The Smithsonian and MCA Tokyo

In Isabel's own words:
Best Day Ever;
It was the best day ever. Just one of those days when everything goes right and the world is an exciting place. The very pavements seemed to be alive with magical stories to tell of the many feet that had trampled upon them. Everything seemed right with the world because I was going to meet my friend for a glass of wine. You know that friend who just gets you? Who you don't have to explain everything too, and they laugh in all the right places. I was going to meet that friend and have a glass of wine and everything else could wait. It really was the best day ever.

In Isabel's own words:
Call of the Sea:
The sea was calling, calling its sirens song. It threw tempting little waves flirtatiously on the shore. 'Come,' it said, 'come.' The sea glittered with promise, it whispered sweet nothings as it rolled the tiny gem pebbles on the beach. 'Come to me,' it said, 'I will show you the world, the true meaning of life.'
The people felt the pull, the blood pumping in their veins, like a magnet they were drawn towards the sea. Mesmerised, bewitched, they stripped of their clothes, leaving them in molehills on the beach. The breeze caressed bare bottoms, free from the constraints of life. They stepped cautiously at first but as excitement overwhelmed them they broke into a run as they neared the water. The sea tickled their toes and beckoned them in, making sweet promises of delightful pleasures.

In Isabel's own words:
Water;
Once upon a time there was water. It fell from the sky in clear blue droplets. It made pools and puddles on the ground. The water tasted sweet and pure, it was good to drink, to make soup, to swim in or to wash in. It made the plants and trees grow big and luscious, it was the lifeblood of everything..
Everybody loved water and no one ever questioned where it came from or that one day the rain might stop and there would be no water.
The water women went about their usual business, they made soup, they grew cabbages, they argued and laughed together. The well was always full, there was food aplenty, life thrived. It is sometimes said that ignorance is bliss, and the women did live in bliss although they did not know it. They did not know that one day the rain would stop. It was only when the rain stopped that they knew they had lived in bliss.
