About the Item
"Malevich On My Mind" is a geometric abstraction in yellow and white gold leaf and oil on wood panel, part of a series of small 3-dimensional constructions and 2-dimensional paintings by Charlotte Andry Gibbs inspired by Russian Suprematism, the American Geometric Abstraction movement of the 1930s and 1940s, and the body of Josef Albers' 'Homage to the Square' series.
Charlotte Gibbs’ paintings of flags, such iconic Pop cultural symbols as the Coca-Cola logo, and the stark geometric forms identified with the Bauhaus and Minimalism startle our expectations of such classic imagery with their incongruous execution in the very formal mediums of 23-karat gold leaf and oil. Consistently to be found in Gibbs’ sparkly and luxurious works is the artist’s keen knowledge of the history of art, her love of referencing it, and a subtle sense of humor.

Gibbs focuses on iconography, using gold leaf and paint to re-create flags, corporate logos, and legendary works of art. While crafting a gold American flag, or a Coca-Cola or Chevrolet logo in gold feels like a too obvious jab at capitalism, all the works together draw intriguing formal connections.”
Charlotte Andry Gibbs attended Newcomb College and received a BFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 1971. She has had 4 one-person exhibitions at the Beth Urdang Gallery and has been included in over 25 group shows, primarily in the New England area where the artist resides.
Most recently Gibbs had the distinct honor of being awarded First Prize in the Roddy Compeition held at the Concord Center for Visual Arts, where she was singled out among the 540 submissions by 340 artists by Katherine French, Guest Curator,
Former Director of The Danforth Art Museum and current Director of Catamount Arts.
