About the Item

DAMIEN HIRST - THE CURRENCY: 6274. NOBODY SHOULD HEAR IT Date of creation: 2016 Medium: Enamel paint on handmade paper Edition: 5.149 unique works on paper Size: 21.5 x 30 cm Condition: In mint conditions and never framed This is a physical unique work created by Damien Hirst in 2016, being part of his The Currency project, created with enamel paint on handmade paper that has been cut manually, producing spontaneous imperfections and asymmetries. Just like any other currency, this work has anti-counterfeiting measures that ensure its authenticity. On verso, the work comes hand signed and titled by the artist. It also includes a watermark, a holographic label and a microdot featuring a portrait of the artist. Additional authenticity features include a watermark and a dry stamp with the logo of the artist. Damien Hirst's The Currency is his biggest and most ambitious project up to date. Back in July 14, 2021 the artist offered 10.000 of unique works sold through NFT. Anyone who acquired an NFT would have a year to decide to keep that NFT or exchange it for the physical work. This has been the biggest poll about NFT vs. physical works. Results of the polled ended up with 5.149 deciding to keep their original physical works while 4.851 holders decided to keep their NFT works. Here we offer one of these unique physical works. These works are unique, were created by the artist in 2016 and they have been catalogued with what it is called as neural network. The algorithm makes it possible to set specific features of the work and compares the differences between the different works. Colours, weight, density, drips or texture are some of the characteristics ranked on each work. ABOUT THE ARTIST Damien Hirst is a British contemporary artist born on June 7, 1965, in Bristol, England. He is best known for his controversial works, which often explore themes of death, mortality, and the human condition. Hirst rose to fame in the 1990s as one of the leaders of the Young British Artists (YBAs) movement, a group of artists who gained international recognition for their avant-garde and often shocking works. Hirst grew up in Leeds, North Yorkshire, and moved to London in 1984 to study Fine Art at Goldsmiths College. It was there that he first gained attention for his work, particularly his installations, which often included live animals in formaldehyde-filled tanks. His earliest notable work was "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" (1991), a tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde and displayed in a glass tank. Hirst's art is often characterized by its use of unexpected materials, such as live animals, medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals. He is also known for his exploration of the themes of mortality and the fragility of life. Some of his most famous works include "For the Love of God" (2007), a platinum cast of a human skull encrusted with over 8,000 diamonds, and "The Golden Calf" (2008), a life-size sculpture of a calf made entirely of 18-carat gold. Throughout his career, Hirst has been a controversial figure in the art world, with some critics accusing him of creating works solely for shock value. However, his work has also been celebrated for its innovation and its ability to provoke conversation and challenge traditional notions of art. In addition to his work as an artist, Hirst has also been involved in various other projects. In 1995, he co-founded the art collective known as the Young British Artists, which included other notable artists such as Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas. He has also collaborated with various fashion designers, including Alexander McQueen and Miuccia Prada. Hirst has had numerous solo exhibitions and has been featured in many group shows around the world. In 2012, he was the subject of a major retrospective at the Tate Modern in London, which was the most-visited solo exhibition in the museum's history. His work is held in the collections of major museums and institutions around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Despite his success as an artist, Hirst has also faced criticism and controversy throughout his career. In 2008, he caused a stir in the art world when he bypassed his dealers and auctioned off a series of new works directly through Sotheby's. The sale, which took place during the height of the global financial crisis, was a success, but it also drew criticism from some who accused Hirst of being motivated solely by money. Despite this, Hirst remains one of the most influential and celebrated artists of his generation. His work continues to challenge and inspire audiences around the world, and his legacy is sure to endure for many years to come. Provenance Compass Rose, Chicago Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings. From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League. Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. In 1953, the Tibor de Nagy...
