About the Item

Waterline Fine Art, Austin, TX is pleased to present the following work: Oil on canvas. 62 x 24 in. 64.25 x 26.25 in. (framed) Custom framed in a veneered white oak floater with a gilded face. Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1940 to an English mother and Indonesian father, James Bohary is an American abstract expressionist painter. After graduating from New York University with a BS in Art Education in 1968, Bohary spent the following year studying painting and drawing with Philip Guston at the New York Studio School. Heavily influenced by the first and second waves of American abstract expressionism, Bohary is known to paint very thick, multi-layered, heavily impastoed works that can take years to finalize, depending on the number of layers and the time required for the canvases to completely dry. Bohary has enjoyed a long career in academia, with teaching posts at Dartmouth, the Parsons School of Fine Arts, Queens College, and SUNY Binghamton, where he holds the title of Professor Emeritus. Bohary has been the subject of nearly 30 solo exhibitions over the course of his career, and has participated in group shows at a number of prominent galleries, including Allan Stone Gallery, New York; Camillos Kouros Gallery, New York; Brata Gallery, New York; Leo Castelli Gallery, New York; and Gruenebaum Gallery, New York. James Bohary continues to work out of his Connecticut studio. His work can be found in many significant public and private collections, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth University; the National Academy of Design, New York; and the Snite Museum of Art at Notre Dame University.
