Larry Rivers
Last Civil War Veteran

1961

About the Item

"Last Civil War Veteran" is an oil painting on panel made by Larry Rivers in 1961. The artwork size is 9 1/2 x 7 inches. The framed size is 12 3/4 x 10 1/4 x 1 1/2 inches. The work is signed and dated, verso, "Rivers 61". The subject for this painting was taken from a photograph from the May 11 1959 issue of Life magazine of a man thought to be the last surviving Civil War veteran, Walter Williams, who was 116 years old at the time the photo was taken and a Confederate veteran. From this subject, Rivers created three paintings, and two screenprint editions in the late 50s and early 60s, during the height of the Civil Rights Era. "Last Civil War Veteran" shows a hazy figure with unidentifiable features reclined in a bed with the Confederate and American flags around him. The blurred composition of the piece is thought to underscore the romantacism of the past and unresolved issues in American history. Rivers had treated other historical subjects in the 50s and 60s with a similar intent to showcase the inaccuracies of the historical record. Only two other large-scale versions of "The Last Civil War Veteran" are known to exist (painted in 1959 and 1961); one is located in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and another in the de Young Museum, San Francisco. "Untitled" is a painting by American artist David Smith. David Smith’s paintings from the 1930s rarely come to market, and when Untitled (Billiard Players) surfaced at a Christie’s auction in 2018, it created quite a stir, realizing an impressive price of $1.15 million. Painted around the same time, Untitled shares many similarities with Untitled (Billiard Players). Both paintings affirm Smith’s place among the American artists when ideas and style began to intermingle and coalesce around Picasso’s innovations. Uniquely positioned in temperament and ability, Smith was a man of considerable ambition whose direct-metal configurations would have much to do with achieving new ideas about abstraction. Yet all along, he insisted he was a painter, not a sculptor who painted. Paintings by Smith...

John Randall Nelson’s paintings are layered with his own personal language consisting of patterns, symbols, and archetypes that may not make any literal sense but play on subconscious associations. His paintings are thick with paint, poured pigment and saturated washes with layers of drawing and collage. While Nelson's work is akin to outsider, folk art, it should be noted that he received his MFA from Arizona State University in 1995 and has completed commissions for clients as diverse as the National Endowment for the Arts, the United States Postal Service...
