About the Item

Loren Munk (b. 1951) American, Salt Lake City, UT Cubist Figure on a Bicycle, 1989 Gouache, ink, collage on paper 17 ½ x 18 inches unframed (44.45 x 45.72 cm) 28 ¼ x 29 ½ inches framed (71.76 x 74.93 cm) Signed and dated on bottom right Loren Munk-- also known by his pseudonym James Kalm-- is a key member of the Neo-Expressionist movement in New York, and maintains a practice that emphasizes New York and city identities, color, and art theory and critique. In this mixed media work on paper, Munk emphasizes color and the straddling of mediums. In it, he layers gouache paint, different types of paper, and circular shapes to compositionally produce a person riding on a bike. While the piece is figural, in Munk's distinct use of color and mixed media, the work becomes instead about its color and cubist aesthetic, straddling the line between kitsch and expression. Munk is also well known for his online journalism on his Youtube channel and remains active as a reviewer and critic of New York art scenes, primarily those of Williamsburg. This mixed-media work “Cubist Figure on a Bicycle” may potentially be alluding to this art journalism career, in which he often rides bikes to galleries and art shows, coyly referring to himself as “the guy on the bike.”
