Michael Snow
Untitled Tapestry Sketch

1976

About the Item

Michael Snow (1929-2023) was one of the most remarkable multi-disciplinary Canadian artists. Renowned for his wide-ranging body of work, from experimental films and jazz recordings to sculptures and large-scale public art, Snow masterfully navigated between populist and avant-garde forms. His unparalleled versatility across mediums sets him apart as a singular force in Canadian 20th century art. In 1977, the Art Gallery of Ontario presented an exhibition that explored the 20th-century resurgence of tapestry, weaving and textile-based art across Europe and the United States. "Canadian Tapestries 1977" marked the first time Canadian artists designed editioned tapestries, which later found their place adorning the walls of commercial and public buildings for widespread appreciation. In addition to Snow, some of the other Canadian artists that created textile works included Gershon Iskowitz, Christopher Pratt, Joyce Wieland, Sorel Etrog and William Perehudoff, to mention a few. "Tapestry Sketch" is a preparatory work that offers a glimpse into Snow's creative practice. In this work, a bold assortment of diagonal bars stretch across the composition, completed in variant shades of tangerine, fire engine red, and rose quartz. A meticulous grid overlays the surface of the work, evoking the illusion of a brick wall—a conceptual and cheeky motif, particularly in the context of an indoor display. Snow's tapestry was selected for the cover of "Canadian Tapestries 1977," the official AGO catalogue for the exhibition. Today, Snow's work is held in numerous public collections including The MoMA (NYC), the Art Gallery of Ontario, and The National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa). In 1981, Snow was awarded the Order of Canada and upgraded to a companion in 2007 in recognition of his international contributions to visual arts. Questions about this piece? Contact us. La Plonge #23
By William Perehudoff
Located in Toronto, Ontario
William Perehudoff (1918-2013) is one of the most cherished and collected Canadian abstract painters. His work exemplifies how color field painting was expressed in Canada. Like some of his contemporaries, he was encouraged and guided by legendary New York critic Clement Greenberg. Perehudoff spent several summers at the University of Saskatchewan's legendary Emma Lake Artist's Workshop where he worked and studied with Jules Olitski and Kenneth Noland during the 1960s. Perehudoff is known for his simple and exuberant compositions that juxtapose and celebrate color. His series "La Plonge...

Blue Splash
By Dan Christensen
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Dan Christensen (1942-2007) is widely recognized as one of America’s foremost color abstractionists. Over the course of forty years as an artist, Christensen was devoted to exploring and expanding the constantly shifting trends of 20th century abstraction. Christensen established his reputation at the end of the 1960s, as began using spray guns to create colorful stacks, loops, and lines in his artworks. This body of work was considered by the legendary art critic Clement Greenberg among the most original abstract paintings of the decade. Unlike many of his contemporaries who dedicated their practice to a signature style, Christensen was unrelentingly curious and allowed his dynamic version of abstraction to evolve as he tried new techniques and aesthetics. During the 1980's and 1990's in particular, Christensen focused on experimenting with different forms of washing, spraying, and layering colours over top of each other. The works from Christensen's late period combine the gestural drama of Abstract Expressionism with the stained surface look popularized by the color field artists. The aesthetic complexity he achieved with these combined techniques are perfectly demonstrated in this later untitled work (aka "Blue...
