Part painting, part sculpture and part optical illusion, this work by the London-based artist immerses the viewer in a fragmented room with an open window, revealing one of the Crescent City's most iconic homes. Hughes' experimentations with perspective and perception involve the viewer in a highly tangible way that is rarely seen in fine art. Driven by ideas of originality and engagement, Hughes is among the leading figures in contemporary British art. In Dice and Dollars , Hughes draws inspiration from one of America’s most alluring cities. In this composition of the Louisiana city known for the birth of jazz, the music of New Orleans takes center stage with a poster of Louis Armstrong on the left wall and a rendition of Fernando Botero’s famous painting, La Cantante to the right. The singing woman is framed by an upper-room view of the familiar orange and fern-clad LaBranche building on Royal Street. Larger-than-life dice seemingly fall from the ceiling onto stacks of money. Throughout this inventive and surreal composition, Hughes demonstrates both his appreciation for tradition and his delightful wit. As a city of gamblers, entertainers, visionaries and historians, New Orleans is no stranger to the mind-boggling paradoxes to which Hughes is drawn. For Hughes to feel his art is complete, it needs the physical presence of the spectator, engaging the body, eye and mind. Hughes aims for this immersive experience, with the goal of taking his viewers somewhere they have never been before, though elements, such as famous architecture, walls, library settings and landscapes seem familiar. Hughes coined the term reverspective for these types of constructions, which he describes as “perspective in reverse.” He utilizes the traditional idea of linear perspective in which an artist can create the illusion of receding space and dimensionality with converging lines upon a single point on the horizon line. However, he reverses this concept by bringing these lines forward into space using three-dimensional planes while abiding by a strict vanishing point. Hughes says, “When the principles of perspective are reversed, the mind is deceived into believing that a static painting can move of its own accord.” Born in 1939, Patrick Hughes completed formal training at the Leeds College of Art before beginning his artistic career. He developed his first reverspective work in 1964 for the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. Entitled Sticking-Out Room, Hughes’ hypnotic vision of an interior room seemed to recede in space, marking the beginning of the artist’s long fascination with perspective illusions. Hughes’ work resides in prestigious collections including the British Library and the British Academy in London. Dated 2023

Auguste Herbin 1882-1960 French Aoum II Signed and dated 'herbin 1944' (lower right); titled "aoum" 2 (lower left) Oil on canvas This bold and vivid abstract oil on canvas was painted by French painter Auguste Herbin, a pioneer in popularizing Modernist abstraction. Over his expansive nearly 60-year career, Herbin rubbed shoulders with art history greats from Pablo Picasso to Georges Braque before honing his personal and innovative style. Entitled Aoum II, the painting stands apart for its daring color palette and crisp composition. Painted in 1944, Aoum II embodies Herbin’s fully-formed artistic aesthetic and stylistic tenets. Only two years prior to its creation, Herbin developed his “alphabet plastique,” a synergistic visual language of color and form that he described in detail in his published book L’art non-figuratif non-objectif. Though the artist was highly cerebral in his process of creating art, one does not need to perfectly understand his principles to feel Aoum II's magnetism. The geometric shapes visible in the composition — primarily fragmented triangles and circles — are rendered in bold pinks, blues and yellows on a deep black background. His tiered application of color creates a natural three-register visual effect as if to tell a story from the apex of the form to its denouement. Auguste Herbin began his artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lille before moving to Paris in 1901. In the early years of his career, he experimented with a variety of styles, exhibiting Post-Impressionistic works at the Salon des Indépendants in 1906 and Fauvist paintings at the Salon d'Automne in 1907.
