About the Artist: Paul Kauvar Smith was a talented American artist known for his modernist works. He began his art education at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts in 1915-1916, with a brief interruption due to World War I. After returning to the School of Fine Arts post-war, Smith continued his studies at Washington University in St. Louis. In 1921, Smith moved to Colorado to study under John E. Thompson at the Denver Academy of Fine and Applied Arts. Thompson, a pioneer of modernism in Denver, greatly influenced Smith’s artistic direction. By 1923, Smith was appointed an instructor at the Academy, where he continued to influence the next generation of artists. That same year, Smith's work was accepted for display at the Denver Art Museum for the first time. He was later awarded two solo exhibitions, and his work was included in the museum’s Anne Evans collection. In 1959, the Denver Art Museum featured his painting Houses at Victor in their Western Heritage exhibition catalog. A long-time Denver resident, Smith was an active member of the American Artists Professional League, as well as the Colorado and Denver Art Guilds. He also participated in The Colorado Fifteen, an avant-garde group of artists formed in 1948 that contributed significantly to Denver's cultural landscape.
