About the Item

Ruggero Vanni's "Matter and Antimatter" is a 52 x 76-inch abstract expressionist painting. Yellow, blue, and rust colors collide to create a tempestuous sky filled with disintegration and luminosity, capturing the essence of emotion and movement. There is a clear reference to the tempestuous seascape of Romantic painter William Turner. Growing up in Rome and now based in New York, Vanni's work beautifully captures the transition from classicism to contemporary art, emphasizing the importance of color and light in his visual practice, with each stroke and hue intricately weaving a visual narrative that captivates the viewer. Whereas Vanni's older paintings are more rigid in their spatial construction and clearly marked by references to classical masters like 18th-century painter Gian Battista Tiepolo, Vanni has evolved through the years towards freedom of gestural expression. This painting is part of his most recent works, where he achieved a balance between these different aspects of his practice, creating canvases where "classical" compositions are born from instinctive thick brush strokes that are first cut out and then carefully reassembled one by one on the surface of the canvas. Whereas the expressionist nature of Vanni's brush strokes anchors him in a contemporary context referencing American Abstract Expressionism, the classicist roots of his pictorial practice remain evident in his concept that painting is an extension of architecture, intended not only to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the surroundings but also to create a unique and immersive experience for all who interact with the space. Vanni's work is figurative in that it depicts a three-dimensional space, but it is also non-representational, avoiding any form that could be clearly recognizable. His paintings allude, in Vanni's words, "to natural phenomena, in a raw state, devoid of the limiting constrictions of literal representation. Nature is there as a landscape, a view looking up in the air or plunging down underwater. Imagery is kept on the edge of recognition, so the final association is created in the mind". Ruggero Vanni was born in 1958 Paris, France, and lives and works in New York. Private collections include the Pinacoteca of Aosta, Italy; Irving Cancer Center, Columbia University, NY; Yale Eye Center, Yale University, New Haven, CT.

Birth of Light - Abstract Gestural Oil Painting with Orange and Yellow Colors
By Ruggero Vanni
Located in New York, NY
Ruggero Vanni's Birth of Light is a 60 x 48 inch abstract gestural oil painting. It is an abstract landscape of vigorous brushstrokes and light, with a strong luminous central focus. The main colors are orange, yellow, and rust. There are clear references to the masters of the Hudson River School, also known as Luminism, as well as the Romantic paintings of English artist William Turner. Vanni states, "My works allude to natural phenomena, in a raw state, devoid of the limiting constrictions of literal representation. Nature is there, as a landscape, a view looking up in the air, or plunging down underwater. Imagery kept on the edge of recognition, so the final association is created in the mind. Contrasts of matter, color, light, are created to provoke emotional responses. In the large paintings the atmospheric composition is built by raised brushstrokes shattered and reassembled to reveal an underlying struggle. In the smaller works paper is cast tumultuously as a counterpoint to its inherent frailness. References to the history of painting are multiple and mixed: Venetian impasto and glazing, Luminist light, Abstract Expressionist texture, Baroque perspective. It is important to avoid mannerism, metabolize the suggestions and integrate them with empirical visual stimuli. Dissecting responses to everyday experiences into light, color, matter. There is no intent to escape reality, but to create a visual experience that communicates directly with our psyche; open to be reinterpreted continuously through our own evolution and the changing times." Ruggero Vanni was born in Paris. He studied painting from 1973 to 1978 at the Istituto d’Arte in Rome, Italy, under the guidance of Italian artist Michelangelo Conte...
