Beray Sheet, Abstract Painting on Leather, 2019

2019

About the Item

Artist Commentary: This piece is based on the "deconstruction" of an image I captured when on a trip to Lancaster, CA to observe hills covered with poppies. I synthesized the basic elements of the landscape (sky = blue, ochre and red = flowers) and turned them into areas of color. This method of distilling a traditional image, allowed me to focus only on the striking colors and the way they interact with each other. Keywords: Abstract, gestural, woven Artist Biography: I was born in Mexico City in 1957 and moved to Los Angeles in 1984. I'm told that when I was just born and laying in one of those bassinets in the hospital, my paternal grandparents came to see me and while looking through the window into the baby ward, my grandfather said to my dad: "give him a pen, he wants to write." In a way, my grandfather was right. I needed a pen indeed, but not really to write, but to draw. One of my earliest memories of connecting with the art world (around age four or five) is sitting in a corner in my mom's art class with a bunch of colored chalk just scribbling away. From then on, I traded the chalk for anything that could make a mark on a surface. I have filled scrapbooks with notes and ideas, have studied art history, and relish every opportunity to see and learn what other artists are doing. As a teenager I started taking photographs and used them as inspiration for drawings, paintings, and mixed media works. For the last 50 years I have dedicated myself to a process of exploration and discovery, and it has been an enriching and rewarding experience.

The Tar Pits, Modern and Contemporary Wall Art, 2019
By Sam Silberstein
Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary: Years ago while on a hunt for compositions to photograph, I came across a splattered wall. I was in an industrial area in northeast Los Angeles and driving through an alley behind some warehouses. I stopped in front of a wall that had tar running down from a roof that had undergone some repairs. The tar patterns reminded me of art by Joan Mitchell or Jackson Pollock. I took several photographs of the wall concentrating on the more gestural sections. Inspired by those photos, I created "The Tar Pits...

Issues of social politics, ancestral references, and astral projections are presented with fragmented elements of 'real life' collaged and collapsed, as dreams are prone to do. If connections are made, all the better. I feel that life should remind us of our dreams." - Richard J. Watson Richard J. Watson is an icon in the Philadelphia art world.
