About the Item

Large Test Pattern 3 (Abstract Painting) Acrylic/gouache on wood - Unframed Test Pattern series sets up a generic template as a poetic prompt to consider how behavioural responses to color and form stimulate an abstract sense of contemporary being. The ostensible template here refers to the color calibration test of the machinic eye (the camera's eye) in a common tool for this purpose, the test pattern. This is not a strictly conceptual usage however, but more of a purposeful play with instrumental meaning and its possible liberation in poetic trance.

What We Need - large, bright, colourful, geometric abstract acrylic on canvas
By Milly Ristvedt
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Abstract artist Milly Ristvedt uses colour as a language to express her thoughts and emotions. When the master colourist created this painting, she was reminded of tumultuous world events including concerns around climate change. The title refers to those thoughts. Clean, vertical ‘bands’ in bright orange, yellow, lime green, and black appear to express hope. A single, narrow horizontal...

PDNH D QHZ UHDOLWB (cryptography series)
By Thomas Paul Raggio
Located in New York, NY
Abstract. Vibrant. Painting. About the Artist: "I contemplate every color, mark, and placement of the line to formulate what I call rhythmic velocities: relationships of color and motion that give life to the composition, creating a heartbeat. I am interested in the duality of math and design: through repetition, a line made of color becomes a rhythmic pattern. This concept is found when composing music, organic landscapes and architectural structures. By referencing these sources, my abstractions transcend their formal components, reaching beyond a minimalist canon. My work is composed of hard edges and thin lines set against an abstract field or a pictorial space. Each color has a quickness that is relative to the colors surrounding it; this gives my paintings visual movement and dislocates the viewer. Through linear and geometric forms, my paintings explore design and mathematical concepts found broadly throughout culture. They are improvised from a wide range of sources such as my conversations with scholars in various fields of music, architecture and engineering, my life experiences and travels." Extension - large, bright, colourful, geometric abstract acrylic on canvas
By Milly Ristvedt
Located in Bloomfield, ON
In this dynamic new work by Milly Ritsvedt, bold vertical bands of pure colour run the length of the painting. As always, Ristvedt’s choice of colours in this hard-edged piece is masterful—turquoise, deep pink, blue and bright yellow. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s paintings were ‘more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’ “The paintings of the past two or three years explore questions of form, colour and process that arise out of earlier works.” Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. In the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with famed Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski...
