About the Item
Highland Cattle Watering is a landscape/cattle painting, late 19th century/early 20th Century by Scottish artist Douglas Cameron. This is an oil painting on canvas with highly decorative gilt frame, signed by the artist in the left hand corner, painted in his prime period, known to flourish from 1880-1910. Cameron is known for painting the Scottish countryside, landscapes and cattle, such as this loch with mountains and Highland cows. In this painting there is the cattle by a loch with naturalistic light on the mountainside. The croft cottages are reminiscent of the home of poet Robbie Burns.
Cameron's paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout Scotland. Acquired by Saltire Gallerie and imported to the USA.
Highland Cattle Watering is in a likely original period ornate gilt frame measuring 29" high by 39" wide. The frame is in good condition, with a loss on the lower right side and other imperfections/minor losses consistent with the age and patina of the gold gilt. The frame was regilded in very small areas by Saltire Gallerie to blend with the patina.
The oil paint remains with good color, no losses or flaking, and with no defects noted.
'Highland Cattle Watering' is painted with impressionistic color and light in brighter greens and blues, as seen in other Highland paintings by this artist, 'Hillside Road in the Highlands' sold by Saltire Gallerie as an example. The scene is idyllic and restful, in a naturalistic plein art style.
In overall very good condition, ready to hang!
