About the Item

Frances Mabel Hollams (1877-1964) Jill, a West Highland terrier signed and dated 'FM Hollams 38' (lower right) and inscribed 'JILL' (lower left) oil on panel 13 ½ x 18 in. (34.3 x 45.8 cm.) frame 15 ½ x 19 ⅞ in. (39.4 x 50.5 cm.) Frances Mabel Hollams is one of the leading British animal portraitists of the early 20th century, known for her highly detailed and lifelike depictions of horses and dogs. This charming portrait of a West Highland Terrier exemplifies her skill in capturing both the physical likeness and personality of her subjects. Painted on panel, a signature feature of Hollams’ work, the piece demonstrates her meticulous technique, with fine brushwork rendering the texture of the dog’s wiry white coat against the warm, natural wood grain background. West Highland Terriers, affectionately known as Westies, were originally bred in Scotland for hunting small game. By the early 20th century, they had become popular companion dogs, admired for their intelligence, alertness, and distinctive, sturdy build. Hollams’ portrait captures these defining traits, with the terrier’s bright, inquisitive expression and poised stance suggesting both playfulness and determination.
