Hunt Slonem
4 Corners, 2018 - Hunt Slonem

2018

About the Item

"4 Corners", an oil on canvas work created by Hunt Slonem in 2018. This piece measures 152 x 152 cm (60 x 60 inches) and is in excellent, new condition. The artwork features a dense arrangement of morning glory flowers, with varying shades of blue and violet petals that seem to cascade across the canvas in a rhythmic, almost hypnotic pattern. Imagine an entire field of morning glory flowers, each bloom rendered in thick, textured brushstrokes. The flowers, though similar in shape, are differentiated by their vibrant shades of blue, purple, and hints of white, creating a visual play of light and shadow. The petals seem to radiate outward from a central point, capturing the depth and complexity of the flower’s form, while the repetition gives the impression of endless blooms stretching beyond the frame. The background is interwoven with dark greens, enhancing the naturalistic feel, as if these flowers are part of a lush, overgrown garden. This painting is special because it highlights Slonem’s ability to bring seemingly simple subjects to life through vibrant colors and his signature textured approach. Morning glories, known for their fleeting beauty—blooming and closing within a single day—serve as a metaphor for the fleeting yet cyclical nature of life, a theme that resonates deeply in Slonem's body of work. Hunt Slonem is widely recognized for his fascination with nature, including his recurring motifs of birds and flowers, particularly those that have personal meaning to him. The morning glories depicted in 4 Corners reflect his love for organic, repeated forms, which offer a sense of calm and meditation. His distinctive impasto technique, where he applies thick layers of paint, gives the flowers a tactile quality, making them feel almost sculptural. This tactile surface, combined with his bold color choices, creates a sense of depth and movement, drawing the viewer into the painting. Slonem’s works often evoke a sense of timeless beauty, and in 4 Corners, the viewer can feel connected to the fleeting beauty of nature, yet grounded by the solid, repetitive forms of the morning glory blooms. This blend of fragility and structure is what makes the painting particularly special. signed on the back

Hand signed lower right, titled verso. Blue Woman with Seated Camels MIxed media oil painting on heavy art paper Robert Beauchamp (1923 – March 1995) was an American figurative painter and arts educator. Beauchamp's paintings and drawings are known for depicting dramatic creatures and figures with expressionistic colors. His work was described in the New York Times as being "both frightening and amusing,". He was a Guggenheim Fellow and a student of Hans Hofmann. Robert Beauchamp was born in Denver, Colorado in 1923. He had three brothers and three sisters, and the children were orphaned by both parents by the time Beauchamp was three. The family grew up impoverished due to the Great Depression, living in a community house with other families. As a child he dabbled in art but it wasn't until high school that he began taking art classes. When not creating art he also played sports; football and basketball, and enjoyed chemistry and geology. He was told he was good at drawing, and replaced study hall classes with art classes, receiving instruction and inspiration from a Welsh teacher named R. Idris Thomas. While in high school Beauchamp would go, every Monday, to the public library and a local museum where he would read books about art...
