About the Item

I just spoke with Hunt Slonem's studio regarding this special painting and the meaning behind it. Hunt said that the white cross in the middle is the most significant element, symbolizing spiritual presence, while the birds symbolize spirit and vitality. He referred to the bird in the top left corner as a “mystic jay.” Spirituality and religion are important for Hunt and this shows through in his paintings. The red areas in this work act as a strong visual contrast between the white cross and quick brushstrokes used to paint the outlines of the birds. Hunt used the words “spiritual juxtaposition” to describe this work, and I think that sums it up quite well. I hope this explanation from Hunt helps you appreciate this special painting. This large painting By Hunt Slonem measures 36x46" framed, the canvas size is 30x40". It is signed by Hunt Slonem in 1992 on the back of the canvas. We have included close up images in this listing so that you can see the heavy paint textures on the surface of the canvas which are a trademark of the work of Hunt Slonem. This painting comes with a certificate of Authenticity and appraisal from Hunt Slonem's Studio in New York. The appraisal is for $33,600. which is $10,000 more than our asking price. Hunt is an internationally recognized American painter. His work is in the collections of more that 100 museums including, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney Museum just to mention a few. The above statements are from the massive coffee table book on Slonems bird paintings "Birds Hunt Slonem" Hunt Slonem is an artist whose style of painting is immediately recognizable. His thickly painted oil on canvas art with his heavy textures and strokes of movement are what makes his work instantly known by collectors world wide. Hunt has said that his choice of companions since childhood has been the company of birds and his inspiration comes from them. He lives with 60 birds in his massive New York City studio and they are always with him when he paints. Hunt Slonem's richly colored bird paintings are celebrated worldwide. Slonem's subjects seem unconfined to a flat surface, brimming as they are with texture and movement. At the same time, his unique style and technique gives his art the unmistakable look of a Hunt Slonem masterpiece. Art Critics have said that Hunt Slonem is arguably one of the most fascinating artists of our time. His celebrated career continues to move forward in leaps and bounds, with a remarkable schedule of museum and gallery expositions around the world.

Museum Collected artist Abstract Illusion acrylic painting on board 37x27"
By James Havard
Located in Southampton, NY
In order to make room at the gallery for new work coming in August for the Summer Season here in the Hamptons, certain work is offered at a substantial price reduction. This is one of those works. Originally priced at $8000, we are now offering it at only $3950. James Havard is considered one of the "pioneers of the abstract illusionism movement" One of James Havard's homes and studio's was on the island of Tortola and this work from 1979 evokes the feel of the aqua blue waters and the reference of Salt Island in the painting refers to the salty feel of the ocean waters. In the 1970's Havard was the principle artist that started working in an abstract style that included gestural brush strokes and paint squeezed directly from the tube to create beautiful surface textures in his paintings. He then painted shadows to certain areas of paint to create the 3d illusion of depth to his paintings. This created the "Abstract Illusion" movement of the 1970's. Havard had many museum exhibitions and his paintings were sort after and exhibited at galleries around the world. Havard along with other artists like, Michael Gallagher, George Green...
