About the Item
In Serengeti Dawn, a lone elephant moves steadily across the open plains, its two large tusks glinting softly in the filtered morning light. This solitary figure captures the quiet dignity and strength of one of Africa’s most iconic creatures during the wet season in the Serengeti. For elephants, this season signals abundance—lush grasses emerge, temporary waterholes fill, and the land hums with renewal. The elephant’s presence, calm and assured, reflects the deep memory and matriarchal wisdom that guides these giants through shifting landscapes.
Coutts uses a restrained palette of grey and silver to echo both the elephant’s textured hide and the luminous quality of rain-soaked skies. Silver leaf catches the light across the canvas, suggesting moisture in the air and the shimmer of dawn on wet earth. The hues convey not just the elephant’s physicality, but the atmosphere surrounding it—fleeting, reflective, and alive with movement. Known for her rich textures and layered media, Coutts renders the scene with an experimental touch, inviting the viewer into a deeply personal and poetic vision of the wild.
New Zealander Jan Coutts moved to London to study at Camden Art School, Central St. Martins and the Royal College of Art. Her portrayals of animals inhabiting the African plains are inspired by her travels to the Serengeti & Ngorongoro conservation areas of Tanzania. With an experimental approach, Jan mixes layers of different media and textures to capture speed, movement, light and pattern in her personal view of the wild.

Duel, Original Elephant Painting, Safari Animal Art, Landscape Wildlife Painting
By Sophie Harden
Located in Deddington, GB
Duel is an original oil painting by Sophie Harden. This wonderful painting of two fighting bull elephants, kicking up the dust as they go has been inspired by Sophie’s travels to Kenya. Painted on dark a blue background, using contrasting white oil to pick out where the light hits the subject gives this painting a huge sense of movement and fluidity. Sophie’s contemporary monochrome technique allows movement to flood the painting, from the explosive energy and grace of animals to the small details that captures a moment in time. Sophie works to accentuate the adaptation of light, making the viewer perceive a 3D object...
