André Brasilier was the son of the painter Jacques Brasilier. After studying in Saumur and St-Germain-en-Laye, he joined Brianchon's studio in 1949 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was awarded the Prix Florence-Blumenthal in 1952 and the Grand Prix de Rome in 1953. He lived at the Villa de' Medicis from 1954 to 1957. He also received the Prix Charles-Morellet at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture in 1961 and the Prix de Villeneuve-sur-Lot in 1962.
Brasilier's paintings are populated by beautiful, elegant women, respectable nudes and high-class gentlemen and are set in pleasant Val-de-Loire backgrounds, resplendent with landscapes and charming towns. Revealing the distant inspiration of Gauguin and the well-assimilated influence of certain other artists, Brasilier depicts a peaceful, comfortable world, free from care, in a very simple, stylish manner, with delicate harmonies bathed in accommodating sunlight.
Brasilier took part in group exhibitions from 1956, including many in Paris: at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture; regularly at the Salon d'Automne; at the École de Paris exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier (1954-1957); at the Paris Biennale (1961 and 1963); and at the Salon Comparaisons (1961-1964). Mainly, however, he showed his work in solo exhibitions, including: at the Galerie Drouet in Paris (1959); at the Galerie Weil in Paris (1960 and 1964); at the David B. Finlay Gallery in New York (1962, 1971 and 1974); at the Atelier Mourlot in Paris (1964); at the Galerie Guiot in Paris (1967); at the Galerie de Paris (1969, 1972 and 1976); at the Yoshii Gallery in Tokyo (1969, 1974 and 1977); at the Galerie Matignon in Paris (1979); a first retrospective at the Château de Chenonceau in Paris (1980); at the Nichido Gallery in Tokyo (1983); a retrospective at the Musée Picasso in Antibes...

Artist biography
Orovida Camille Pissarro, Lucien and Esther Pissarro’s only child, was the first woman in the Pissarro family as well as the first of her generation to become an artist. Born in Epping, England in 1893, she lived and worked predominantly in London where she became a prominent member of several British arts clubs and societies.
She first learned to paint in the Impressionist style of her father, but after a brief period of formal study with Walter Sickert in 1913 she renounced formal art schooling. Throughout her career, Orovida always remained outside of any mainstream British art movements. Much to Lucien's disappointment she soon turned away from naturalistic painting and developed her own unusual style combining elements of Japanese, Chinese, Persian and Indian art. Her rejection of Impressionism, which for the Pissarro family had become a way of life, together with the simultaneous decision to drop her famous last name and simply use Orovida as a ‘nom de peintre’, reflected a deep desire for independence and distance from the weight of the family legacy.
Orovida's most distinctive and notable works were produced from the period of 1919 to 1939 using her own homemade egg tempera applied in thin, delicate washes to silk, linen or paper and sometimes embellished with brocade borders. Roger Lersy was born in Paris, France 1920, in the rough neighborhood surrounding Place Pigalle. His youth was marked by extreme poverty. Lersy studied art and music at the École des Arts Apppliqués. He was a painter, lithographer and musician-composer He belongs to the École de Paris and was a member in the movement of the Young Painting. By 1946, when he first exhibited in Paris, Lersy became one of the founders of the School of Paris’ New Graphic School. Lersy received the Prix des Amateurs d’Art in 1953, the Shell Prize in 1954 and the Grand Prize of the City of Marseilles in 1953. Lersy could be defined as a Baroque expressionist. For Bernard Dorival, Roger Lersy is along with Gabriel Dauchot, Jean Commère and Raymond Guerrier among "the most noted champions of this expressionism which is part of the continuation of Bernard Buffet's miserabilism".

About the Painting
Landscape with Cows is a fine example of California Scene painting, the West Coast version of the American Scene genre practiced during the 1930s and 1940s by the likes of Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood and John Steuart Curry. Armer stands out as one of the rare female oil painters working in this style in California, as most of her contemporaries were men whose fame largely depended on watercolor as a medium. Like many Regionalist painters, Armer heeded the call to paint the local scene during the 1930s and even in the depths of the Great Depression, she captured the natural beauty and abundance of the California ranch lands. For many migrants from the Dust Bowl and the southern parts of the United States, California was a golden land of opportunity. In Landscape with Cows, Armer plays on this theme by portraying the fields and distant foothills in a variety of golden hues. This work is a celebration of California’s unique geography, and it fits nicely into the grand tradition of American landscape painting. Armer’s spare treatment of the distant hills and buildings presages the abstract forms she later began to explore in earnest. Like many other artists working during the 1930s, Armer moved strongly towards abstraction by the 1940s, making her critically celebrated California Scene landscapes rare.
