About the Item

Oil on canvas 25 x 45,5 cm (34,7 x 55,2 cm with frame) = 9.8 × 17.9 in (13.7 × 21.7 in with frame) Signed lower left Stamp of sale on the back of the canvas In 1838, Eugène Delacroix opened a studio enabling him to fulfill commissions for the decoration of the library at the Palais Bourbon. Young artists from Toulouse, who were breaking away from the teachings of the aging and “classical” Joseph Roques, joined Delacroix, who was eager to train collaborators. Among them were Eugène Leygue, Alexandre Bida, Achille de Ressac, Jules Garipuy, Léon Fauré, Augustin Long, and Pierre Andrieu. A close collaborator of Eugène Delacroix from 1844 to 1863, Andrieu worked on the decoration of Paris City Hall, the Senate, the Chamber of Deputies, and the Chapel of the Angels in the Church of Saint-Sulpice from 1849 to 1861. Andrieu knew how to break away from his collaboration, his work being particularly evident at the Château de Guermantes, in Le Mans, and in Tours. From 1850 to 1853, he decorated the choir of the church of Saint-Jory and was commissioned to paint a picture for the church of Villeneuve-lès-Bouloc. This last work earned him a reprimand from Delacroix, who saw his best collaborator slipping away. Upon the death of his master, Andrieu was entrusted with the restoration of the ceiling of the Apollo Gallery at the Louvre and, in 1868, the paintings in the Senate library. An epigone with his own personality as a painter, he opened a studio from 1871 to 1880. Our “Tiger” is one of the studies that punctuate his work. Dynamic modeling, light, creamy impasto caressing the animal that stands out against an oriental landscape, clouds sweeping across the sky—all this makes this painting not a slavish reproduction, but a personal tribute to the work of Delacroix.
