About the Item
Sarah Aspinall (b. 1965) is a contemporary British painter celebrated for her refined and dynamic portrayals of horses, particularly within the context of racing. Born in 1965, she trained in fine art at Central Saint Martins, London, before continuing her studies in Rome, where she mastered traditional Old Master techniques, including the use of layered oils, resin-based glazes, and varnishes. These classical methods underpin her luminous and richly textured surfaces.
Her reputation as an equestrian painter was firmly established in 1995, when the Italian Jockey Club commissioned her to paint the Derby-winning horse Luso. Since then, Aspinall has become widely regarded as one of the leading equestrian artists of her generation, producing both formal portraits of racehorses and atmospheric studies of racing scenes.
She works mainly on commission but regularly exhibits at the Osborne Studio Gallery, London, where her paintings are sought after by collectors in Britain and abroad. Aspinall’s style blends meticulous observation of equine anatomy with expressive brushwork that conveys speed, light, and the spectacle of the racecourse.
In this commanding work, Sarah Aspinall captures the thrill of the start of a race at Goodwood, one of Britain’s most picturesque racecourses. The composition is dominated by six horses and their jockeys, lined up in motion as they surge forward from the starting line. Each horse is depicted with keen anatomical precision: straining muscles, alert ears, and the fluid power of movement, while the jockeys’ silks add bright accents of red, blue, and white against the green trees tones of the scene.
Aspinall’s mastery of light infuses the painting with energy—the play of sunlight glinting on horses’ coats and fluttering silks emphasizes the immediacy of the moment.
Executed in her signature contemporary impressionist style, the painting balances detail with dynamism. The brushwork is free yet controlled, perfectly suited to conveying the tension, speed, and excitement of the race’s dramatic opening moments.
The Mile Start, Goodwood exemplifies Aspinall’s talent for merging technical accuracy with expressive energy, a hallmark of her celebrated equestrian oeuvre.
It is signed at the lower right and signed and inscribed on the back.
