About the Item

A superb, detailed and meticulous egg tempera oil on panel from around 1960 by Stuart Maxwell Armfield. The painting depicts a flock of seagulls in a bold, strong and surreal colouring with sharp edges and fine lines. A really lovely painting. Signed lower left. Provenance. Midlands estate. Condition. Oil on card/panel 24 inches by 20 inches unframed in excellent gallery condition. Handmade gallery frame 30 by 28 inches framed. Gallery condition. Stuart Maxwell Armfield (1916-2000) was renowned for his use of the traditional egg tempera technique, a skilled process that uses egg yolk to bind pigments, and which dates from the Byzantine world of the early Middle Ages. He was born in Sanderstead, Surrey, and studied at the West of England College of Art. He showed at both the Royal Academy in London and with St Ives Society of Artists of which he was a member. Encouraged by his successful artist uncle, Maxwell Armfield, Stuart took up the use of tempera (what he called ‘the be-all and end-all of painting’) and was very keen on promoting the use of such traditional skills through their use in the production of his pictures. He particularly favoured the medium for its ability to depict clear lines, razor sharp detail and bright colour. He is perhaps best known for his vivid still life works.

Henrietta Caledon, Seagulls, Original Oil Painting, Seascape Art, Affordable Art
By Henrietta Caledon
Located in Deddington, GB
Henrietta Caledon Seagulls Original Oil Painting Oil on Wood Canvas Size: H 51cm x W 61cm Sold Unframed Please note that in situ images are purely an indication of how a piece may look). Landscape painting of seagulls fishing in the sea by Henrietta Caledon. There is a family of seagulls that live on my roof, and I became fascinated by them during the lockdown. They are so agile, and they represent ‘soaring above the drama’, ‘looking at things from a different angle’, adaptability, stamina, resourcefulness, and freedom. The turquoise and blue colours of the sea almost swallow the gulls in the waves and their orange beaks are a wonderful contrast. Henrietta Caledon was born in London in 1964. Studied art and history of art for O’level and A’level at West Heath School and then Queensgate School. Trained at Xium International design service company in 1982/83. Started interior decorating business Henrietta Designs in 1984 and have carried out many projects around the world for thirty five years, working a lot with design and colour. 2016-2019, Trained with Nick Bashall at Rossetti Studios and the sketch club at Dilke Street. 2018 exhibited three paintings in group exhibition at The Hurlingham Club, London. 2019 solo exhibition at Kiki McDonough...
