40"x60" large scale watercolor on paper, featuring a moose, beaver, wolverine, cardinal and raven on a distressed sailboat, whose sail is mended with colorful blue checkered and red polka dot quilted fabric. A telescope stands on a tripod looking off into the unknown distance, while fall oak and maple leaves of yellow, orange and red float through the air around the boat. An apple and two potatoes are skewered on the moose's antlers, giving a note of humor to the surrealist composition. signed on reverse by the artist. Unframed, please inquire about framing options.
Thomas Broadbent's allegorical paintings are in contemporary surrealist style, with depictions of animal behavior crossing into the realm of mankind. Composed objects in Broadbent's paintings draw upon fre--association, the unconscious and existential thoughts as to our role in the natural world.
Thomas Broadbent has shown extensively throughout the U.S. as well as internationally. Broadbent’s work won the Pulse Prize for best solo booth at Pulse Art Fair. His work was subsequently featured in “Mission to Space” at the Children’s Art Museum in Manhattan. His nine-foot long “Lunar Mosaic” painting hangs in the American Consolate building in Moscow. His work is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Broadbent’s numerous solo exhibitions include the Visual Art’s Center of New Jersey, Croxhapox Gallery (Gent, Belgium) Voorkamer Gallery (Lier, Belgium) Inspace gallery (Beijing, China) and the Newark Arts Council. Broadbent’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The New Jersey Star-Ledger, NY Arts, The Brooklyn Rail and numerous other publications.

"I have built my career on surrealist,anatomical/botanical fantasies; beautifully rendered yet sometimes haunting and gruesome, void of irony and done with absolute sincerity. My work builds meaning primarily by exploring the unbridgeable difference between animals and people. A proactive imagery of humans and animals suggests an investigation of linguistics, the natural sciences and human sociology all in respect to the parallel universe of other species alongside us. An undercurrent of eroticism, viewed with a steady detachment often can be part of Salvi's works, morphing human and animal forms and throwing psychological riddles challenging the viewer to decide where life begins or ends.
Salvi's watercolours with its technical virtuosity turn images from nature to a surrealistic dance of survival. The works are challenging, complex and magically real and acknowledge life’s gentleness and aggressiveness in unison. While nature’s logic could be used to argue the very existence of an omnipotent creator, Salvi, paradoxically suggests ambiguity to life's bigger and deeper questions; answers of which he feels don't come in neat packages. "
