Zamy Steynovitz was bon in Liegnitz Poland, in 1951. He immigrated to Israel in 1957. The aspiration to be a painter stems from his childhood and before leaving Poland, he won the first prize in an art competition for children. Zamy was formally educated at the Art School in Tel-Aviv and at the Royal Academy of London. Upon completing his studies, Zamy earnestly pursued his career and establish his place in the art world by displaying his work in one man exhibits and arts fairs around the world. His art displays chromatic and thematic richness and his choice of subjects has been strongly influenced by Jewish tradition, his Eastern European Jewish heritage and folklore. Zamy’s popular themes include Paris cafes, still-life, flowers, circuses and landscapes. Circus with acrobats and Harlequin. In the early stages of his career, he was partial to rich pastels and light brush strokes. In the early 1980s, Zamy visited South America, where the new surroundings enhanced his work with local brightness and color. His art gained chromatic power and his palette became richer in tones as the textures became thicker and the background darker and more colorful. These changes coupled with his thematic persistence allowed him to develop into a sensitive and mature artist. Zamy expresses a universal humanistic vision in his creations: man’s connection to his heritage and physical surroundings, two imperative aspects of our lives that should be heralded during these estranged technological times. As a result of his devotion to world peace, Zamy is known in the circles of the Nobel Institute for Peace in Norway. He is acquainted with many Nobel Prize winners including Anwar Sadat, Mehahem Begin, the Dalai Lama, Itzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Elie Wiesel, Desmund Tutu and Oscar Arias, the ex-President of Costa Rica, along with many other politicians and artists. Zamy tragically passed away in September 2000. Pluie a Venice is painted in Hambourg's preferred palette of muted blue-green, grey, and gold with splashes of ruby red, deep blue, and emerald green. The soft colors work well for beach scenes and rainy days such as the ones portrayed in this painting. The impressionistic scene shows multiple pedestrians strolling down the boardwalk, shielding themselves from the rain with colorful umbrellas that provide pops of color and balance the overcast sky.
The background contains a three-masted ship and Piazza San Marco's famous bell tower and Basilica. Hambourg uses the minimum number of brushstrokes necessary to portray ships, seagulls, buildings and people as well as reflections on the glistening sidewalk. The brushstrokes in the sky have an interesting texture that is controlled yet carefree and there is heavy impasto throughout. His portrayal is both realistic and romanticized.
Hambourg was clearly influenced by the great Impressionist artists of earlier generations, perhaps none more than the one with a direct connection to his family. Hambourg's wife, Nicole Rachet, was born into a family with a large collection of works by Impressionist master Eugene Boudin. Rachet's grandfather was a contemporary and friend of Boudin's, and a collector of his work. In their later years, Hambourg and Rachet donated over 300 canvases by Boudin and other artists to the Eugene Boudin Museum in Honfleur, France. Max Karp is widely recognized as the chief innovator of modern enameling. Self-taught and driven, over the years he perfected a unique process which allowed for his creation of museum-quality, kiln-fired two-dimensional painting. Karp was born in Ohio in 1916 but raised in California. He began painting as a child by depicting various species of birds and insects for his father who was an ornithologist and entomologist. In the mid-1960's, Karp became interested in the enamel process. Dennis Jones was first introduced to the use of a bidet while being extremely ill in Hurghada, Egypt. He has played the game of ‘Jenga’ with prostitutes in Phuket, Thailand. Once he hiked down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon from the North Rim and back in twelve hours. Jones has also visited fifty US National Parks.
The work of Dennis Jones is growth oriented. There is diversity among his oeuvre and much risk in such an approach. Eschewing a ‘signature style’ that he considers to be boring, creatively limiting and market driven, he prefers to consider how method and expression intermingle and form a conceptual basis. A cursory glance may consider his prodigious output to lack focus, but a deeper reading reveals that he remains true to himself and allows his work to take him where it needs to go. There has always been the presence of a figure in his work, either implied, or directly visible. One can trace several years of development from his interest in figurative and cartoon-like imagery in, Toyland (2006), through his foray into text based work (2007-13) and a later influence of abstraction (2012-18). Following this trajectory brings one to his current body of work that combines figuration, cartoons and abstraction.
He is a visual artist, educator, and architect. Each of the ‘hats’ he wears directly influence his work. He states that ‘a fascination with an integration of material, process and expression, truth of emotion and visually communicating thought are what sustain and drive him as an artist.
Jones has participated in over seventy solo and group shows that include local, national and international venues. His creative output includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, videos, photos, books, teaching and residential architecture. Jones’ work was selected to be included in the New American Paintings 2019 Midwest Competition Publication, juried by Staci Boris, Associate Director of Exhibitions, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Currently, his focus is on a growing body of paintings, in mixed media, on canvas that combine abstraction, figuration and cartoon imagery.
Jones had a one person exhibition at the University of Michigan in September through December of 2018. A review of the show can be read on the page titled, Candyland Review. Earlier the same year, He curated an exhibition titled, SIX, that opened in January of 2018, at The Janice Charach Gallery; a five thousand square foot space, located in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The exhibition featured the work of six Detroit artists and provided adequate space for each to show a body of work…essentially six individual shows in one space.

Figurative art, as opposed to abstract art, retains features from the observable world in its representational depictions of subject matter. Most commonly, figurative paintings reference and explore the human body, but they can also include landscapes, architecture, plants and animals — all portrayed with realism.
While the oldest figurative art dates back tens of thousands of years to cave wall paintings, figurative works made from observation became especially prominent in the early Renaissance.
