A Poitillist (Pointillism) Northern Landscape, 1913
Located in Stockholm, SE
Anders Loman (1879–1953) Sweden Northern Landscape, 1913 oil on canvas signed and dated And.Loman 1913 canvas dimensions framed 67.5 x 120 cm unframed 56.5 x 109 cm Essay: In the realm of early 20th-century Swedish art, Anders Loman may not have been the most widely recognized name, yet his talent is evident in this painting that echo both traditional Scandinavian motifs and avant-garde techniques. "Northern Landscape" from 1913 is a prime example of this juxtaposition. At first glance, the canvas is dominated by imposing evergreens in the foreground. Their detail is painstakingly rendered, providing a stark contrast to the background. Beyond these trees lies a tranquil lake and distant mountains, but it is here that Loman's boldness in technique is most apparent. Inspired by the Pointillism movement, the background is rendered using short brush strokes, with the waters shimmering in shades of pink and lilac, and the mountains painted...

Tête de paysanne à la coiffe blanche by Vincent van Gogh
Located in New Orleans, LA
Vincent van Gogh 1853-1890 Dutch Tête de paysanne à la coiffe blanche Oil on canvas laid down on panel A striking and evocative example of Vincent van Gogh’s early portraiture, Tête de paysanne à la coiffe blanche showcases the artists’ powerful ability to capture both the likeness and the essence of his sitters. Rendered in thick, deliberate brushstrokes, van Gogh paints his sitter with an unbroken forward gaze. The composition's tertiary palette conjures a dimly lit evening setting, accentuating the dramatic lighting of the subject's solemn face. The woman’s white headpiece...

"Saint Germain" Paris Cityscape by Konstantin Korovine
Located in Soquel, CA
"Saint Germain" Paris Cityscape by Konstantin Korovine Lively Paris street scene by Konstantin Alexievitch Korovine (Constant Korovin) (Russian, 1861-1939). In a plaza outside a large building, people are going about their daily lives. In the foreground, a woman relaxes at a table with a few apples on it. A car passes behind the woman to the left. The painting is executed in Korovine's signature style - rapid, confident strokes that evoke the character of the scene without excess detail. Signed in the lower left corner "Constant Korovine". And Titled with date and signature, Location and dated: "Saint Germaine, September 13, 1931", and artist's name "Constant Korovine" written in lower right corner. Two stamps on verso (one from Douane Centrale, Paris) Board size: 13"H x 16"W Konstantin Alekseyevich Korovin was a leading Russian Impressionist painter. Konstantin was born in Moscow to a merchant family officially registered as peasants of Vladimir gubernia. His father, Aleksey Mikhailovich Korovin, earned a university degree and was more interested in arts and music than in the family business established by Konstantin's grandfather. Konstantin's older brother, Sergey Korovin, was a notable realist painter. Konstantin's relative Illarion Pryanishnikov was also a prominent painter of the time and a teacher at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. In 1875 Korovin entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he learned from Vasily Perov and Alexei Savrasov. His brother Sergey was already a student of the School. During their scholar years the Korovins became friends with their fellow students Valentin Serov and Isaac Levitan...

Le carnaval du sage by René Magritte
Located in New Orleans, LA
René Magritte 1898-1967 Belgian Le carnaval du sage (The Sage’s Carnival) Signed “Magritte” (lower right); titled and dated "Le carnaval du sage 1947" (en verso) Oil on canvas The enigmatic paintings of René Magritte have become some of the most familiar and celebrated of the Surrealist movement. Among the most influential of the Surrealist painters of the 20th century, Magritte is an artist of international renown, as beloved for his popular appeal as he is for the psychological intensity of his works. The present oil on canvas, entitled Le carnaval du sage, was executed in 1947 at the height of his career, and it is a tour-de-force example of the haunting, mysterious scenes that comprise his oeuvre. Painted in the years following the Second World War, Le carnaval du sage showcases several recurring themes from Magritte’s oeuvre. Chiefly, a juxtaposition between the visible and the hidden is keenly felt. Throughout his career, Magritte explores the psychological obsession with revealing what is hidden, particularly with regard to the human face. In his Le fils de l’homme, he obscures the face of a man in a bowler hat with an apple, while his Les amants (Metropolitan Museum of Art) conceals the faces of two lovers with white sheets. In Le carnaval du sage, Magritte juxtaposes the blatant nudity of his central figure by masking her face, simultaneously revealing and concealing her from the viewer. The work also incorporates two of Magritte’s most common tropes – the glass of water and the baguette. Lending the scene a strange sense of domesticity, they appear infinitely familiar and distinctly out of place, and thus heighten the uncanny effect of Magritte’s composition. In the background hovers a ghost obscured by a sheet, a figure which was of particular fascination to Magritte beginning in 1946. He once wrote to his fellow Surrealist Paul Nougé: "I saw in a dream an answer to the problem of the ghost: the traditional ghost draped...

Double Portrait of King Frederik IV and Queen Louise of Mecklenburg-Güstrow of D
Located in New Orleans, LA
When viewed straight on, this "turning picture" by French artist Gaspar Antoine de Bois-Clair appears to be a disorganized collection of painted facial features and wooden slats. However, when viewed at an angle from either side, two separate images are revealed — portraits of Frederik IV and Louise of Mecklenburg-Güstrow, the King and Queen of Denmark. A wonder of both portraiture and trompe l'oeil, this work demonstrates the artist's skill in rendering intriguing visual effects. An impressive exercise in representing depth and 3-dimensionality in painting, the work is executed on a series of triangularly-cut strips of wood to create an effect now known as lenticular imaging...

La Danse pyrrhique (Pyrrhic Dance)
Located in New Orleans, LA
This painting by Jean-Léon Gérôme entitled La Danse pyrrhique is among the most fascinating compositions ever composed by the Academic master’s hand. Gérôme’s iconic scenes of the East captivated a generation, and this work showcases all of the artist’s unparalleled talents. Set in the Ptolemaic period of Ancient Egypt, its depiction of the ritual Pyrrhic dance is vivid and striking. Beautifully painted and rich with detail, it represents the best of Gérôme’s famed Orientalist scenes. In La Danse pyrrhique, Gérôme gives us a dramatic rendering of this ancient war dance. Greek in origin, it was performed by costumed dancers armed with swords who completed a series of movements set to music pantomiming combat. Homer wrote that Achilles performed this dance in a show of respect and grief at the funeral of his friend, Patroclus. When Julius Caesar introduced it to the Roman Games, its popularity spread across the Roman Empire to include Egypt, where Gérôme’s composition is set. Gérôme visited Egypt for the first time in 1856, and he returned throughout the late 19th century when this work was created. Gérôme’s first-hand familiarity with this setting is evident in this piece, and his visual narrative is unlike any other. His paintings combine the rationalist style of historical paintings and the theatrical...

Figurative Paintings for Sale

Figurative art, as opposed to abstract art, retains features from the observable world in its representational depictions of subject matter. Most commonly, figurative paintings reference and explore the human body, but they can also include landscapes, architecture, plants and animals — all portrayed with realism.

While the oldest figurative art dates back tens of thousands of years to cave wall paintings, figurative works made from observation became especially prominent in the early Renaissance. Artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and other Renaissance masters created naturalistic representations of their subjects.

Pablo Picasso is lauded for laying the foundation for modern figurative art in the 1920s. Although abstracted, this work held a strong connection to representing people and other subjects. Other famous figurative artists include Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Figurative art in the 20th century would span such diverse genres as Expressionism, Pop art and Surrealism.

Today, a number of figural artists — such as Sedrick Huckaby, Daisy Patton and Eileen Cooper — are making art that uses the human body as its subject.

Because figurative art represents subjects from the real world, natural colors are common in these paintings. A piece of figurative art can be an exciting starting point for setting a tone and creating a color palette in a room.
