Jean David was a painter and designer, known for his contributions to the Romanian avant-garde and to the early modernist art of Israel (then recently founded). He was the first Israeli artist to be inducted into the illustrious Alliance Graphique Nationale in 1954. He had studied between 1927 and 1937 at various art academies in Paris. In 1929 he participated for the first time at a collective exhibition in Bucharest and in 1933 he had his first personal exhibition (in the same city). In the early '30s he was a member of the Surrealist group "unu" (meaning "one"). In 1942, he left Romania in a boat with 12 other Jews, including Theodor Brauner, the brother of Victor Brauner. After being captured by British authorities in Cyprus, he managed to reach Palestine in 1944. In 1949 he went to live in Jerusalem, where he was active in developing ceramic arts, sculpture works in copper, and artistic tapestry wall hangings under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Together with Marcel Janco, he founded in Israel the artist village known as Ein Hod. He also gained much reputation as a muralist and graphic and poster designer, having designed numerous posters and other works for the El Al air company, Maccabiah games, Zim shipping and The Israel tourist industry. David’s primary importance was in the design of posters. He used a wildly colorful decorative style in his art, which combined illustration, caricature, and national figures. In addition he designed wall hangings for “Maskit,” and also worked in the decoration of public buildings. His paintings had elements of Surrealism and included images from nature and landscapes. Childhood Tirado grew up in an upper-middle-class family environment. His inclination for the arts started from an early age. At 8 years old, he was already experimenting with tridimensional forms, creating molds out of cast lead from pieces previously gathered on the streets. These first artistic experiences led by his inquisitive nature, provided the ground to continue exploring the possibilities with different materials like wood, waste and plaster. His childhood games were centered around painting and sculpting, which played an important role that ranged from recreational to aesthetics. When Tirado turned 12 years of age, his parents agreed for him to attend private art classes with professor Javier Hernandez in Caracas. Later on, he realized that Art was a profession that required investment in materials, reason that led him to work at a furniture store painting landscapes and figurative art to decorate the exhibit room. Pierre Jaggi was born in Geneva on February 25, 1957, where he spent his childhood and completed his secondary studies. At 18 he decided to travel the wide world. He left for Asia, for a 9-month journey that took him to India and Nepal after crossing part of Afghanistan on horseback. He takes a keen interest in indigenous ways of life and various local crafts. Subsequently, he crossed the Sahara, which he will cross again on various occasions. Driven by a thirst for adventure, he embarks on a pirogue and descends the Niger River with other companions. This experience on the borders of our civilizations will earn him the knowledge of the essential and the relative. At the age of 20 he worked on a cargo ship bound for Togo and continued his journey through West Africa. After a short stay in Switzerland, he returned to Africa for two years during which he learned to shape the earth and produced various murals. Then it is the meeting with South America, the Andean populations and their pre-Columbian history, the crossing of the Amazon on the Amazon river. This is the period of his first travel photos. In Brazil, he manufactures sets and jewelry, and embarks from Rio as a crew member on a sailboat to cross the Atlantic. This 45-day crossing to Cape Town will remain a milestone in its existence. Back in Geneva in 1982 he met the one who would become his companion. Inspired by nature, he presented his first outdoor installations during the Open Doors Workshops in the Cher in 1999, and became a member of the Center Céramique de la Borne. In 2000, he participated in the first Contemporary Art Fair in Bourges and exhibited at the Voutat gallery in Geneva. At the beginning of 2001, he returned to Uruguay in order to prepare the publication of a photo book for the “Ides et Calendes” editions, which would be released in September of that same year under the name “Cachilas, a story of jacks in Uruguay. In 2002, he exhibited at the Diorama gallery in Geneva, at the Shakan gallery in Lausanne, at the Contemporary Art Fair in Bourges, and created the North / South installation on the Esplanade Montbenon in Lausanne. He took part in the “Featherweight” exhibition at the Ferme de la Chapelle gallery in Geneva, then produced a fish for the “O'Fish Parade” event which took place as part of the Loire Festival in Orléans, and presented one of his new sculptures for the 11th edition of Quid Novi? In 2010, he won the 19th International Ice Sculpture Competition in Valloire, and exhibits its terracotta pebbles during the “Territories in Movement” of Contemporary Ceramics Japan / France in Paris. About the Artist & his works : Born : Rabin Mondal (1929 – 2019) was born in Howrah, Kolkata. Education : 1959 : Completed his Art Appreciation Course, Ashutosh Museum, Kolkata University, Kolkata. 1956-58 : Attended Evening Classes, Indian College of Art and Draughtmanship, Kolkata. 1952 : Bachelor of Commerce, Vidyasagar College, Kolkata University, Kolkata. Art Career : The industrial belt of Howrah, with its inherent tendency towards violence, anguish and suffering influenced him deeply, and found its way into his works. So did ugly street battles fought by political parties. Mondal discovered that his artistic temperament was out of keeping with the hostile environment and situation. Besides a debilitating knee injury in his childhood created a sense of isolation in the artist, which also finds expression in his canvas. He says what saved him from sheer madness was his talent in art. In 1949, he joined the Vidyasagar College of Art in Kolkata. At that time, a festival of French artists was being held in the city. It exposed him to the works of French modernist artists. Prior to this, he had no exposure to the international art world. He was only familiar with different schools of Indian art, particularly the Bengal school. As a young painter, Mondal was attracted by Jamini Roy`s folk style and Rabindranath Tagore`s disquieting paintings and drawings. But the show by French artists was virtually a turning point in his artistic career. "This was like opening a window to an astounding, astonishing, unsuspected world," he says. This encounter with avant-garde Western art helped him to later incorporate elements from it in his own work. Art Works : Mondal worked out of his Howrah studio, churning out a series of "kings" and "queens" painted with oil on canvas. These are perhaps Mondal’s best known works, depicting tragic looking figures, seemingly suffering from paranoia and fear, yet ironically termed kings and queens. Some of the highlights of this series were the works Man Acting as King, King Being Appeased, King Making Confession, and King and his Assassin. Mondal also produced a series of "deities", which sometimes seem to merge thematically with his "queens". The artist’s deities are generally depicted with radiate crowns, whereas his kings and queens are not. Other favorite subjects of the artist were the brothel and the harem, which he depicted in canvases such as Event in Red Light Area and Orgy. For someone who hates all forms of pretentiousness, he has done a series of painting on queens and empresses. "Though they belong to the past, queens live in virtual isolation, and I feel sorry for them," he says. "It is this isolation that makes the queen, for me, a fascinating subject." One of the criticisms leveled against him is that his works are not pleasing to the eye. To which he replies, "Painting is for communication and not for decoration."
