About the Item

"Papá Noel-labón L". Oil on canvas by Spanish artist Alexis. 2007 Dimensions: 100 x 100 x 2 cm. Framed dimensions: 130 x 130 x 4 cm. In inches: 39.37" x 39.37" x 0.79". Framed: 51.18" x 51.18 "x 1.57". Series: Eslabones (No. 50). Titled, signed, and dated in the lower left corner. In this vibrant work, contemporary artist Alexis invites us into his fascinating universe of Eslabones, a series of artworks that bring to life imagined creatures composed of anatomical elements from various animal species. Each hybrid being is constructed with an internal logic that grants it a unique personality, somewhere between fable and metaphor. “Papá Noel-labón L”, the 50th piece in the series, playfully and poignantly reimagines the iconic figure of Santa Claus as a fantastic animal. Its anatomy blends traits from different creatures, seamlessly united through masterful oil painting technique. The result is a whimsical and richly textured character that captivates through both form and concept. With this piece, Alexis continues his exploration of the boundaries between the animal and the symbolic, the real and the imaginary, creating a visual bridge between nature and popular culture. Papá Noel-labón L is not only a large-format painting but also a literal and metaphorical link in the evolving chain of these impossible beings that invite viewers to look beyond the surface. Published in Alexis. Los Eslabones de Alexis. Faunarte, 2010. Bilingual edition (Spanish–English), 56 pp. Reproduction on p. 52. ABOUT THE ARTIST Alexis (born Pablo Gracia López, Zaragoza, 1969) is a contemporary Spanish painter known for his hybrid animal creations and imaginative figurative work. He studied at the School of Arts in Zaragoza and participated in workshops with notable artists such as Cañada, Mayayo, P. Blanco, and Arce. From an early age, Alexis showed a deep fascination with animal anatomy and behavior, a theme that has profoundly influenced his artistic trajectory. This passion is fully embodied in his most acclaimed series, Los Eslabones, where he creates fictional creatures by combining features from different animals. Each piece evokes a unique personality and serves as a reflection on biodiversity, coexistence, and the human relationship with the natural world. His Eslabones series has been featured in several prominent exhibitions, including an institutional show at the Jerez Zoo in 2010, where 25 large-format pieces were presented. The traveling exhibition has since been seen by over 160,000 visitors across Spain. Alexis was selected to represent Spanish art at the international fair Artexpo in 1998 and was chosen by Spain’s National Mint to design the official Christmas postage stamp in 2005. He currently continues developing the Eslabones series, pushing the boundaries between fantasy and zoology while maintaining a strong emotional connection to animals and the environment.
