About the Item
“War and Peace” is an original oil painting on linen by Andrée Bars.
In warm sandstone tones, ranging from ochre beige to dusty brown, this powerful composition stages a moment of transformation — one that bridges destruction and transcendence. At its center stands a reinterpretation of the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the ancient Greek symbol of triumph, now fragmented and partially dissolving into a flight of doves.
As the statue’s upper body shatters into pieces, white doves emerge from the debris, carrying with them a silent promise of liberation. Their wings cut through the stillness of the ochre brick wall behind, suggesting both fragility and resistance. To the left, a broken chain subtly marks the wall, echoing the possibility of release from violence or oppression.
With its muted palette of stone-gray, soft white, and golden-beige, “War and Peace” becomes a visual metaphor — a symbolic passage from confinement to freedom, from conflict to inner light.
This intimate, thought-provoking piece invites us to reflect on the fragile balance between ruin and hope, memory and flight.
Andrée Bars is a French painter. Having been strictly trained for 4 years by the American hyper-realist painter Mr. Ted Seth Jacobs, who himself inherited 19th century masters’ skills from his own professor, Andrée Bars learned the profession of painting in its purest tradition. She still applies these ancient masters’ technics on her art. Each painting contains at least three layers of oil paint. Andrée Bars applies her skills to hyper-realism on surrealist ideas.
Although her paintings copy the reality to the extreme, they can not be qualified in a simple term of hyperrealism nor of trompe-l’oeil style, her artworks distinguish themselves for a kind of mysterious sweetness they convey to the spectator.
