About the Item

Born Dec. 22, 1930, in Santa Fe, the first of seven children of tinsmith Emilio Romero and colcha artist Senaida Romero, she grew up on Houghton Street in the South Capitol neighborhood, and attended Wood Gormley Elementary School and Loretto Academy. In 1949, when she was 18 years old, Romero Jones was crowned Fiesta queen. “The Fiesta meant more to people in those days in terms of religion,” she would later recall. “There was a real sense of history and tradition. Everybody knew everybody in town, and we were all friends.” On Jan. 1, 1950, she rode on the first New Mexico float in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif. She rode the train to Los Angeles, escorted by historian Fray Angélico Chávez, because her parents weren’t able to attend. “I had a real tight rein kept on me,” she recalled. Growing up, Romero Jones knew Zozobra creator Will Shuster and artist Georgia O’Keeffe, the latter of whom routinely stopped in to order a limeade at the drug store where she worked as a soda jerk. But she steered clear of artistic endeavors as a young woman. She married Jean Jones in 1956, accompanying him to California, Florida and Idaho, and raising four children. Only after returning to Santa Fe in the early 1970s, when she was her 40s, did she begin to investigate art. In an interview with The New Mexican, Romero Jones said her mother first suggested she might consider a career as an artist because “she thought I was bored.” Romero Jones tried tinsmithing, retablo painting, colcha embroidery and hide painting before she was lured into carving wooden saints after the curator of the Spanish Colonial Arts Society showed her the collection of bultos in the basement of the Museum of International Folk Art.
