About the Item

Anita Roy Chowdhury - Untitled Mixed Media on Paper 11 x 15 inches, 2006 (Unframed & Delivered) Style : Her works manifest human figures, nude or draped in different poses and postures, plant and animal forms, elements of landscapes, or still life. She is a nature mystic, a pantheist and essentially a sensual and sensitive visionary. On her brush point she has limitless flexibility. The abstract color field on which her visuals manifest themselves are by and large variegated but her palette is restricted to very few hues. These she uses with a full brush but with a marvelous balance of subtle contrasts. In her painting there is more joy than despair. Her works encompass that area of the mind where words and melodies are fused and are known for the musicality of lines and colors. Her art has a personal idiom that borders between figurative form and abstract idealization. About the Artist and his work : Education: Graduated from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata. Selected Exhibitions : Has participated in major all-India exhibitions. she has had several solo exhibitions.Solo shows include Society of Contemporary Artists gallery, 1962; AIFACS, New Delhi, 1964; Academy of fine Arts, Kolkata, 1964, 1968, 1977, 1980; Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, 1966; Sarala Art Centre, Chennai, 1969; Centre Art Gallery, Kolkata, 1991; Birla Academy of Art and culture, Kolkata, 1995, 1998. she has also participated in various group shows and almost all major All India expositions in the metropolitan cities of India.

"Untitled, " Oil on Paper - Figurative Drawing
Located in Houston, TX
This painting on paper is a playful, yet elegant depiction of a personal mantra of Bhatt’s in which she concedes, “life is a circus.” Amita Bhatt received her BFA from the Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara, India and her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland. Bhatt’s work has been exhibited at noteworthy venues such as the Bluestar Contemporary Art Center, Walters Art Museum, The Station Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Project Row Houses, all in the United States as well as Museo Pedro de Osma in Peru. She has also been the recipient of several prestigious awards and recently served as a Grant Panelist on the National Endowment for the Arts. Her works are included in many important private and public collections. Bhatt digs deep into world philosophies and mythologies to answer questions pertaining to our political as well as personal belief systems. Unafraid to explore uncomfortable territories, the artist mines from a range of sources to create hybrid creatures that are often symbolic of man’s psychological condition in an angst-ridden zeitgeist. In exploring issues of identity and violence, Bhatt’s research led her to the beginnings of mankind. Most ancient creation...
