About the Item
HUEHUETEOTL, an oil painting on canvas by Anna Ortiz, depicts the ancient deity, the god of fire, as a woman feeling the weight of the world, enduring the physical changes one endures over time... Characteristic of the artist's practice, the colors are both harmonious and surreal – with greens, violets and rose rendering the landscape and the figure in a distinctive light. The monumental blocks of stone sit solidly on the fragile, but strong HUEHUETEOTL.
From Anna Ortiz – "Named after one of the most ancient gods from central Mexico, passing through various civilizations, Huehueteotl is the ancient God of Fire, but he is remarkable also for his wrinkled face; he is old. I wanted to take Huehueteotl and turn him into a female deity who feels the weight of her age and pressure on her changing and aging body."

"Strengths and Weaknesses", acrylic, charcoal, art history, abstract, portrait
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Strengths and Weaknesses" is a portrait exploring several elements and strategies that fascinate the artist – notably the performance anxiety induced by simply being an artist, staring down the freight train of art history as it hurtles toward you every time you pick up a brush. Luck? Talent? Maybe. There are signposts and guides in this painting, of course (Cubism! Surrealism! Brancusi! Guston!), but they can clobber you too if you're not careful. Even the phrase "strengths and weaknesses" smacks of compromises and rationalization – deadly to an artist looking to construct their own integral world.
"Strengths and Weaknesses" is an acrylic and charcoal on canvas measuring 54" tall by 54" wide. It was included in the artist's solo show "Comedy Cellar" at Freight + Volume Gallery, New York City in July 2018. (See last photograph for an installation view.)
From Daniel Gerwin – "Schenck’s color is vibrant, wild, saturated to the point of overheating, and altogether brilliant in the balancing of hues, temperatures, shapes, and color quantities. The paintings have a remarkable coherence for their dizzying juxtaposition of so many small chromatic passages." (Essay: The Anxiety and the Ecstasy)

"The Myth of Hula" Hawaiian Oil Painting on Canvas signed Dane Hidalgo
Located in Pasadena, CA
This acrylic painting on canvas, titled “The Myth of Hula” by Dane Hidalgo and dated 2003, is a
captivating visual representation of Hawaiian life and myths depicting a woman emerging from
the Ocean and becoming a flower.
The sky is spangled with stars and the dewdrops seems real.
The painting sits in a very deep light walnut frame.
The hibiscus flower has long been associated with beauty and joy in Hawaii; if worn behind the left ear it indicates that a woman is taken or married, but when worn on the right it signals that she is available or single. In this painting we see the face of a woman who appears to be transformed by a pastel pink hibiscus blossom – could it represent Laka, goddess of Hula ? With so many questions surrounding this oil on canvas, there's no definitive answer – only endless possibilities!
Hula has its origins in ancient history as a ritual dance performed for the Volcano deity, Pele. Hula was a way for the ancient Hawaiians...
