About the Item

Circle of Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) Christ crowned with thorns Oil on canvas 86 x 72 cm (with frame) This painting is based on the composition by Annibale Carracci 'Cristo incoronato di spine' in the Pinacoteca in Bologna. The various copies, including one by Andrea Sacchi (Prado Museum), testify to the appreciation of this work by Annibale Carracci. The painting was the subject of two engraved translations, the first by the Florentine artist Sebastiano Vaiani in 1627. It is one of the first engravings from Carracci's works (with the exception of the very few engravings made during Annibale's lifetime), dedicated to Cardinal Desiderio Scaglia, at the time Commissioner General of the Holy Inquisition. The painting also attracted the interest of Antoon van Dyck who, during his stay in Rome (1622), drew a sketch of Annibale's Crowned Christ, which was included in his famous Italian notebook. The composition's close-up associates Annibale's Crowned Christ with Sebastiano del Piombo's famous depiction of Christ carrying the cross. Despite the close-up view, the artist has succeeded in giving the composition a pronounced depth of perspective by scaling the three figures, which appear on different planes. The small space between Jesus and the executioner who lowers the crown of thorns on his head is occupied by the Lord's beautiful, shortened hands, whose position contributes to the three-dimensional rendering of the painting. For this aspect, Annibale's Crowned Christ (like other works by Carracci that can be dated to the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries) has been linked to Raphael's research into the possibility of giving depth to pictorial space through the gesture of the painted figure, an interest that Caravaggio also occupied at the same time. An echo of Merisi's painting had already been perceived by Cesare Gnudi in the luminist treatment of the painting.
