About the Item
This work is remarkable for its intense dramatic lighting effects and wide-angle composition. Very few artists conceived and executed with acutely dramatic light in the arc of art history. Why, in nature, magical light is a fleeting event and hard to study with preliminary sketches. It's also hard to render the human form under extreme lighting conditions. Of course, there were Caravaggio and Zurburan and a handful of others. It’s a visual style that did not exist until recently. Sarnoff was a John Clymer and Andrew Wyeth student and member of the Society of Illustrators and exhibited at the National Academy of Design. During his career Sarnoff provided illustrations for McCall's, American Weekly, Collier's, Woman's Home Companion, Redbook, The American Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, and Good Housekeeping His advertising campaigns including Karo Syrup, Dextrose, Lucky Strike, Coors, Camay, Sal Hepatica, Listerine, Vick's Vapo Rub, Meds, and Ipana - Work is unframed

"Happy New Year!", The Progressive Farmer Magazine Cover
By Arthur Sarnoff
Located in Fort Washington, PA
The Progressive Farmer magazine cover, January 1958
This dynamic scene of a mid-century New Year's Eve party captures the excitement across generations. While adults eagerly anticipate midnight, children watch from the staircase, and an older couple in the background enjoys a quiet moment together at the buffet table. Sarnoff's use of diagonals brings the scene to life, and the inclusion of noisemakers evokes the festive atmosphere. Created as a cover for the January 1958 issue of The Progressive Farmer, this is a prime example of Sarnoff's vibrant style.
