August Vilhelm Nikolaus Hagborg
In the Garden of His Eminence, 19th Century Work w/ Gilt Frame

About the Item

August Vilhelm Nikolaus Hagborg (Swedish, 1852-1921) In the Garden of His Eminence Oil on wood panel Signed lower left 21 x 25.5 inches 34 x 38.25 inches, framed August Vilhelm Nikolaus Hagborg was a Swedish painter who spent most of his life in France. His father was an associate professor. Against the wishes of his parents, he decided on a career in art and, from 1872 to 1874, he studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm with Vicente Palmaroli. In 1875, he went to Paris to complete his training, but ended by spending most of his life there. Initially, he focused on genre scenes and imagined historical scenes from 18th century France. Some of them were sent home and one was purchased by King Oscar II. When he began painting in Normandy and Brittany, he discovered some of the motifs that would come to dominate his work, such as beaches, fishermen and their families. "Low Tide in the English Channel" was exhibited at the Salon in 1879 and was purchased by the Luxembourg Museum. The publicity from that sale ensured his career. He became part of a circle of Swedish painters that included Prince Eugen, a gifted amateur artist. He was a regular exhibitor at the Salon from 1876 to 1909. In 1878, he represented Sweden at the Exposition Universelle with a large portrait of a fisherman carrying his daughter in his arms. At the Salon of 1880, he was presented with a bust of himself by the Swedish sculptor, Ingel Fallstedt. He was later named a member of the Société nationale des beaux-arts. In 1885, he supported a group known as the "Opponenterna" that was protesting what they felt were the archaic methods employed by the Royal Academy. That same year, he married Gerda Christina Göthberg (1863–1934) in Stockholm. He had a successful showing at the Exposition Universelle in 1889. During summer visits to Sweden, he painted in Skåne and Dalarö. In 1909, he reversed his pattern; making his home in Sweden and visiting Paris. After 1914, he came to favor Dalarna for his painting and his works became more abstract. Upon his death, his body was returned to Sweden and buried at the Norra begravningsplatsen. His works may be seen at the Nationalmuseum and the Gothenburg Museum of Art.

Portrait of a Startled Woman, 20th Century Monumental Oil Painting
Located in Beachwood, OH
Robert Brooks (American, 1922-1992) Portait of a Startled Woman Monumental oil on canvas Signed lower right 80 x 42 inches Born in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1922, Robert Brooks embarked on his art career by winning modeling clay as a reward for good attendance at primary school. He became known for embellishing the margins of his school books with sketches of his friends and maybe teachers. He operated his own sign making business as a teenager, which supplied little money but lots of experience. Brooks also entered every poster and drawing competition in sight. Saturday morning classes at the Swain School of Design provided him with sound instructions in the principles of art, and as a high school senior in 1941, Brooks was awarded a scholarship to Boston's Vesper George School of art in a annual state-wide competition. During this year in Boston, he specialized in design, color and the theater arts and discovered "watercolor" as his favorite medium. At the end of his year Brooks was awarded a scholarship to continue by the Vesper George School but returned to New Bedford before the second year was out in order to work in the design department of a large textile printing concern. He was called to serve his country and after basic training, casual detachments and port of embarkation, he made his own private beachhead on New Caledonia in 1943, where he served as staff artist for The South Pacific Daily News. Brooks painted sketches and watercolors of the local scene during his daytime off-duty hours and won fast acclaim for his crisp, clean paintings...

The Conversation II
Located in Greenwich, CT
Signed lower left Elizabeth Higgins (Canadian, b. 1960) Elizabeth Higgins describes herself as an abstract figurative and landscape painter. Everything around her serves as a potential subject, an inspiration to begin a painting. Fidelity to the landscape, the figure, or the still life is relative, as she isn’t interested in literal depictions; instead, it’s the abstract relationships of these shapes and colors, the abstract pictorial design that drives her work. Higgins’ paintings are rooted in the tradition stemming from Courbet, Derain, Bonnard, Matisse, Morandi, German Expressionism, and the Canadian Group of Seven (also known as the Algonquin School of landscape painters, 1920–1933). She is influenced by the work of her artist-teachers Paul Resika—himself a student of Hans Hofmann—and Robert De Niro, Sr. (1922-1993), as well as the paintings of contemporary artist Peter Doig. Her artistic evolution stretches across this continuum. It is the “in-between”, the hovering between representation and abstraction, that interests her, not the labeling effect of details; instead, she aims directly at the spirit of the painting—of making something come to life. John Goodrich wrote in her catalog essay, “Elizabeth Higgins’ direct brushwork and simplified forms suggest an energy, but crucially, reveal a painter who knows the power of color…” Elizabeth Higgins was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1960. As a Helena...
