About the Item
Beth Dacey's "Beach Couple with Beach Chair" is a 30x40 oil painting on canvas of a woman resting her arm on her partner's leg, while lounging back on a foldable woven beach chair, sitting on a light blue towel. The woman is wearing a white bathing suit, and the man is wearing blue pants. Sunlight shines through the couple creating dappled light through the weave of the light blue chair and casts a shadow onto the beach sand.
Dacey is inspired by vintage, black and white, family photographs. These photos tell stories from the past. They offer clues in context, posture, clothing and subtle gestures. As the images filter through her and make their way onto the canvas, by way of color, stroke, perspective, and composition, they come to life. They become characters in an evolving narrative. Her hope is that each painting will tell a story to you as well.
Beth Dacey has studied painting at the museum schools at the DeCordova, in Lincoln, MA and at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. She has a BA and MA from Boston College and, for a number of years, taught writing and literature there. She is a member of the SOWA Artists Guild, Copley Society of Art, and the Newburyport Art Association. Beth now lives in Newbury, Massachusetts and is grateful to be able to paint in her studio there, overlooking the Great Marsh. She still has her studio in the South End.

Two Green Chairs / figurative oil on canvas
By Mary Robertson
Located in Burlingame, CA
“Mary Robertson’s joyous and meditative paintings are are colorful simulations of contentment and sacred play.” Wayne Thiebaud.
Steeped in the Bay Area figurative movement, Mary Robertson’s oeuvre focuses on an area she knows intimately—Northern California's Russian River, where she has been painting for over 25 years. The region’s beaches, umbrellas, floats, and figures are iconic in the quiet and intimate paintings of Robertson, but it is the afternoon Bay Area light that takes center stage, as it interacts with the landscape to create the real magic. Her oil paintings and watercolors have an affinity with the American Realists, the Impressionists, and the Pointillists such as Seurat. When taking in a Robertson scene, there is a sense of time standing still, and being bathed in a lazy California summer glow that doesn’t fade.
