About the Item

Cecil Chichester Woodstock in Winter, circa 1947 Signed lower left Oil on artist's board 12 x 16 inches Provenance Private Collection, Rhinebeck, New York Cecil Chichester, born in New York City in 1891, was a painter, educator, and accomplished advertising illustrator throughout his career. His artistic training is not well-documented, but it is known that he studied under Hardesty Maratta and Birge Harrison in the early 1900s and spent part of his career in Europe. Chichester is most renowned for his contributions to the Woodstock art colony, where the works he created are regarded as significant milestones in his career. He explored both impressionistic and realistic styles, utilizing vibrant colors and intricate textures in his paintings. His primary focus was on landscapes, particularly highlighting the seasonal transformations. Chichester drew inspiration from the romantic naturalism of the Hudson River School, the realism of the Barbizon School, and the plein air practices of the Impressionists. The influence of the Woodstock artists also infused his work with a sense of 'utopian structure and a cult of the picturesque.' It is believed that Chichester arrived in Woodstock around 1906, guided by Birge Harrison, a pivotal figure in the colony's early development. The Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts colony was established in Woodstock by Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead in 1902. The New York Art Students League operated a summer school in Woodstock from 1906 until 1922 and again from 1947 to 1970. In 1922, the Woodstock Artists Association was formed to coordinate exhibitions during the summer months when the New York City gallery scene was dormant. Chichester was recognized as a prominent student at the Arts Students League and was thought to have served as an instructor there as well as at the Woodstock School of Painting. Despite the limited number of existing exhibition records, there is substantial evidence indicating that Chichester's works received acclaim from critics during his lifetime. His career, along with the contributions of the Woodstock colonists, was primarily represented by prominent galleries in New York City, such as the MacBeth Gallery, which hosted the inaugural exhibition of the groundbreaking Ashcan School. Cecil Chichester's artworks remain a testament to the significance of the Woodstock colony within the broader context of American art. His paintings are part of the collections of numerous galleries and museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the White House.

"Into the Woods" Henry Prellwitz, Lyrical Woman In Wooded Landscape Painting
By Henry Prellwitz
Located in New York, NY
Henry Prellwitz Into the Woods Oil on board 11 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches Henry Prellwitz studied art at the Art Students League of New York, where his chief mentor was Thomas Wilmer Dewing; he later became its director.[3] He also studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1892, he set up his studio in the Holbein Studios building on West 55th Street in Manhattan, where his future wife, the artist Edith Mitchill, also had a studio. They married in 1894 and had a son, Edwin. By the mid 1890s, he was teaching portrait painting at the Pratt Institute, where one of his students was the Cubist artist Max Weber. In 1899, Henry and Edith moved to the north shore of Peconic Bay on Long Island, where their artist friends Irving Ramsay Wiles and Edward August Bell were already established. They painted plein air paintings and also worked in adjoining studios at High House, their Peconic Bay home. Prellwitz painted Impressionist and Tonalist waterscapes of Peconic Bay and allegorical figure paintings such as the 1904 Lotus and Laurel. He exhibited mainly on the east coast and at expositions like the St. Louis World's Fair, where he won a silver medal. He won the Third Hallgarten Prize from the National Academy of Design (NAD) in 1893 for The Prodigal Son, and his Venus won the Thomas B. Clarke Prize at the 1907 NAD exhibition for the best figure composition by an American citizen painted in the United States. Both Prellwitzes disappeared into obscurity for several decades after their deaths in the early 1940s. Rediscovered in the 1980s, they have been called one of the best-kept secrets in art...
