About the Item
Daniel Berman's production is not only torrential and overflowing but also mutating as if it were a chameleon, it changes to support and scale to explore the possibilities of each technique to renew and expand its language. But in this unfolding of options, there is undoubtedly a common thread that runs through his production and weaves together this inexhaustible formal search. And this is a two-dimensional thread: the line of drawing and graphics experimenting with the possibilities of the series and often subverting traditional painting procedures to illuminate new plastic possibilities. At an iconographic level, we find a fixation on anthropomorphic figures, more than strictly human, as a receptacle to express the full range of emotions of the modern subject. Sometimes he appropriates popular characters to tune them until they are almost unrecognizable, making them something deeper and more personal. The vaguely human bodies he draws tend to be threadlike; this anatomical peculiarity makes them labial, capable of twisting and fragmenting to adopt unlikely postures. As if Berman showed us to what extent these beings can only show their joyful vitality through contortion. Despite this fixation on the corporeal that is often specified in ultra-baroque compositions, in his latest works it tends to dissolve, to such a level of fragmentation and blurring that his paintings flirt more and more openly with abstraction.

Daniel Berman
There is in Daniel a fixation on anthropomorphic figures rather than strictly human ones as a receptacle to express the full range of emotions of the modern subject. The cast of characters in his images is extremely varied, but certain beings remain with him, accompany him through time, and adapt to different supports and scales. He appropriates popular cartoons to pimp them up, but he's also surprisingly atavistic and primitive. Despite this fixation on the body, which often materializes in ultra-Baroque compositions, in his latest works he tends towards dissolution. At such a level of fragmentation and blurring, his paintings flirt more openly with abstraction. In this series of new paintings, we can see a clear stylistic evolution and an intense dialogue between formal and conceptual extremes, transcending predictable, repetitive, and standardized results to stand out with tropical expressionism in which its confessional quality is a fundamental bastion at the hands of a chromatic exploration.

Nicole Dikon lives and works between Oahu and Mississippi. Her work spans various media and practices, including woodcut printmaking, writing poetry, making artist books, installing edible and native gardens, and more. Dikon views her practice as a means of grounding her perspective in the principles of ecology.
Born on Maui in 1989, Dikon was raised all over the Americas. As she continues to follow a nomadic path, she grounds her art practice in whatever environment she finds herself. The key to her process lies in her attempt to mimic the cycles of a natural ecosystem. Everything in the studio has value; from the scraped-up ink to the paper scraps, they all have a function that is considered and reused in the system several times before they are reused again in the waste pile for rebirth. In doing so, each image, object, and place created serves as a portal to a right relationship with the natural world, one where we acknowledge our connectedness, not through an intelligent knowing, but a visceral and intuitive awareness.
After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Dikon went on to earn a master's in printmaking from Temple University...
