About the Item
"Lunch on the Slope: Courmayeur" is a contemporary oil painting of skiers trekking among fluffy white snow on the french alps to go to lunch at the popular Italian restaurant. Made up of two canvases, this diptych creates a composition which places the viewer directly on the mountain with the figures.
In "Lunch on the Slope: Courmayeur" we’re placed atop the snow-covered crag, with Yektai in the foreground bundled in his parka and carrying bags of ski equipment. Compositionally, he is very successful at putting the viewer IN the snow; gracefully directing our eye from one subject to the next.
Yektai is turned away from the viewer, his attention fixed on a black dog standing in the snow, just ahead. His ski-companion dressed in a vivid scarlet snowsuit, leads our eye up to the venerated Ristorante Chiecco, emphasized by colorful flags which invite skiers inside for a luxurious break from the elements and fine Italian cuisine. The forest in the background is made up of jagged grey vertical lines. The raw canvas peeking out from beneath the “snow” underscores a sense of distance.
Darius Yektai was born in Southampton NY, in 1973. He lives and works out of his home and studio in Sag Harbor. He grew up in a cultural home of art and artists, with his Greek-American Mother, and his Father, Manoucher Yektai, an Iranian who emigrated to the US after the Second World War, was a prominent Hamptons AbEx painter. Darius has picked up some traits from his father but pushes even further into what is now completely his-own. Darius' most recent body of work is bright, colorful, with oil and acrylic paints laid on thick. He's creating sculptural paintings that can't be read from left to right, they need to be examined from surface to base, from section to section, and then overall as an encompassing whole.

Darius Yektai
