About the Item

Ink painting of a traditional Balinese river scene attributed to Dewa Putu Lopid. Intricate and dynamic ink wash painting of a traditional Balinese river and village scene. In the foreground a young boy is riding a water buffalo and holding out a fishing rod which he is using to interact with a frog. Another boy is standing next to them looking down at the frog and smiling slightly. Behind them a river meanders into the background, connecting to rice fields where more people are working and moving throughout the scene. In the distance is a horizon composed of low mountains with clouds above them. Throughout the piece are flowing, organic brushstrokes which enhance this sense of movement. The detail work in the piece is enhanced by the presence of fine line detailing executed in white ink. Unsigned on front of work. Verso contains gallery tag reading "Art Gallery Pandy Sanur Bali" and handwritten below it "Dewa Putu Lopid Bali" The Pandy Gallery was active from around 1950 to 1970. The original backing to the piece was padded with pages from various Hong Kong newspapers dated from 1956. In the Balinese naming tradition the first name is usually a caste signifier, the middle a birth order indicator, and the last a personal name. Thus Dewa Putu Lopid indicates a member of the Ksatria caste (Dewa), a first born son (Putu), and a personal name of Lopid.

Incredibly detailed depiction of the goddess Kali appearing before a hunter by Konci (Balinese, 20th Century). Overflowing with details and imagery, this piece depicts the goddess Kali in the forest along with other godlike figures. Painted in Peliatan, Ubud Bali by W. Kurpelir as signed on the bottom left hand corner. Balinese Folk Festival ceremonial procession, Ink and acrylic paint on canvas. Batuan painting evolved in the 1930s after a group of local villagers tested different forms with ink-washed paintings upon black backgrounds. These paintings often reveal Batuan’s cultural life, directly through their elements of line, shape, and tone. Meticulous design, craftsmanship, and strong visual impression are characteristic of the style. The painting comprise individual shapes which are painted in a precise and systematic manner that does not leave any empty space. The complexity of the paintings is inevitable as each of the strokes, lines, gradations, the characters or the subjects forms a delicate unity that finely balances the figure-filled canvas. Various gradations of colors separate different sections of the painting. The landscape is enticing and endless. About Bali Art...
