About the Item

Donald Roy Purdy (1925 - 2016 Ct.). Framed oil on board 'Belgian Village' Hand signed lower right, (signed twice) labeled verso. Genre: Modern Subject: Landscape Medium: Oil Surface: Board Country: United States Dimensions: 19.5" x 23.5" (sight); 22" x 26" (framed) Donald Roy Purdy is an American painter whose work evolved through a range of styles and subjects over the course of his long career. Born in 1924, the self-taught artist seldom used models. Rather, Purdy worked largely from the memory and impressions certain subjects and objects left upon his mind. The artist only occasionally paints on canvas, preferring masonite which he considers to be a stronger and longer-lasting material. Though he admits to using gesso, Purdy is known for his special preparations of painting surfaces through a method he keeps secret. Purdy first began painting in an abstract style. He later combined the abstract techniques with representational subject matter, and would continue experimenting with new styles. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Purdy became influenced by the palette of the Barbizon painters and developed a unique approach, melding abstraction with the rigid Realist techniques to produce his signature Impressionist style. Before pursuing a career as an artist, Purdy earned a B.A. from the University of Connecticut and an M.A. in Psychology from Boston University. Two Purdy paintings were included in the US State Department's "Art in America" show which recently toured Europe and several "First Awards" have been given to Purdy in competition with major artists. Among these is the Gold Metal of Honor from the National Academy in New York City. Purdy's pieces are exhibited by the noted Van Diemen-Lilienfeld Gallery, which shows his work alongside the works of Vlaminck, Andre Derain, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso. His one man exhibitions have been seen in New York at the Ruth Butler Galleries, and in Massachusetts and Connecticut. He has shown at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery in Paris, as well. Purdy's art is held in the private collections of the Cincinnati Museum of Art, Columbus Museum of Art, Bridgeport Museum of Art, the Butler Institute, Chase Manhattan Bank, and the Walter P. Chrysler Museum.

Modernist Oil Painting Bucolic Valley Woods Landscape Ralph Della Volpe
Located in Surfside, FL
RALPH DELLA-VOLPE (1923-2017) Fine Art Painter, American Contemporary The Valley Oil on canvas Hand signed lower left and again to stretcher and verso 16 x 20 inches. frame dimensions: 22 1/4 x 26 inches, wood frame Provenance: The Estate of the artist Ralph Della Volpe TRAINING: National Academy of Design The Art Students League, NYC Ralph Eugene Della-Volpe's semi-abstract paintings of often simplified, minimalist, beach scenes and anonymous portraits "convey profound awareness of mood and character", and his paintings are hardly as literal as they may first appear (Arts Magazine. "New York Exhibitions". 1965). His brightly-colored, light-infused, ornamental compositions bring together aspects of many modernist art movements including Fauvism, Impressionism, Symbolism, and abstraction. Della-Volpe first studied painting at the prestigious National Academy of Design before joining the Army during World War II. As a soldier, the artist saw action on Utah Beach, winning a Purple Heart, and his experiences undoubtedly affected his later artistic style. The Fauvist "coloristic exuberance" found in the works beginning in the mid 1960's, with their vibrant fuschias and yellows, seem to offset what could be an otherwise solemn tone to many of his works at the time. Upon his return from military service, Della-Volpe’s style evolved significantly. In the years following the second world war, his work was solemn, imbued with a quiet darkness. Over time, this darkness faded: by the 1950s, influenced by his time at the Art Students League, his oeuvre was overtaken by the tenants of Abstract Expressionism. Paintings from this period boast bold brushwork, energetic compositions, and strong color. Although the next decade saw Della-Volpe trade expressionist abstraction for figuration, his love of color continued to shine through his work.Della-Volpe took a teaching position as the first artist-in-residence at Bennett College in Millbrook, New York where he remained for 28 years, serving as chairman of the Art Department for most of that time. Obviously influenced by impressionism 's preoccupation with the treatment of light, Della-Volpe's own works have a "faultless tonal quality, with its sense of failing light—the areas of silvery gray deepening into rosy tans" (Arts Magazine. "In the Galleries". 1960). Della-Volpe has exhibited widely throughout his career and has lectured on art at colleges, universities, and galleries across the country. "Landscape of a Village Near Mountains" Expressionistic Oil Painting on Masonite
By Michael Baxte
Located in New York, NY
A strong modernist oil painting depicted in 1969 by Russian painter Michael Baxte. Mostly known for his abstracted figures on canvas or street scenes, this piece is a wonderful representation of his bold still life paintings, with expressive use of color, shape, and form. Later in his career, Baxte explores Expressionism, infusing both European and North American stylistic trends. This piece is from later in his career, but we can feel this underlying style throughout. Art measures 18 x 21.75 inches Michael Posner Baxte was born in 1890 in the small town of Staroselje Belarus, Russia. For the first half of the 19th century it was a center of the Chabad movement of Hasidic Jews, but this group was gone by the middle of the 19th century. By the time the Baxte family immigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, the Jewish population numbered only on the hundreds. The native language of the Baxte family was Yiddish. It is likely that the death of Michael Baxte’s father triggered the family’s immigration. Three older brothers arrived in New York between 1903 and 1905. Michael and his mother, Rebecca, arrived in 1907. By 1910 Michael, his mother, and brother, Joseph, were living in New Orleans and may have spent some time on a Louisiana plantation. Around 1912, Michael Baxte returned to Europe to study the violin. In 1914 he, his mother, and Joseph moved to New York City. Meanwhile, in Algeria, a talented young woman painter, Violette Mege, was making history. Since for the first time, a woman won the prestigious Beaux Art competition in Algeria. At first, the awards committee denied her the prize but, with French government intervention, Mege eventually prevailed. She won again 3 years later and, in 1916, used the scholarship to visit the United States of America. When Violette came to New York, she met Baxte, who was, by then, an accomplished violinist, teacher, and composer. Baxte’s compositions were performed at the Tokyo Imperial Theater, and in 1922 he was listed in the American Jewish Yearbook as one of the prominent members of the American Jewish community. As a music teacher he encouraged individual expression. Baxte stated, “No pupil should ever be forced into imitation of the teacher. Art is a personal experience, and the teacher’s truest aim must be to awaken this light of personality through the patient light of science.” By 1920 Michael Baxte and Violette Mege were living together in Manhattan. Although they claimed to be living as husband and wife, it seems that their marriage did not become official until 1928. On their “unofficial” honeymoon around 1917, in Algiers, Baxte confided to her his ambition to paint. There and later in New Mexico where the wonderful steeped sunlight approximates the coloring of Algiers, she taught him his heart’s desire. He never had any other teacher. She never had any other pupil. For ten years she devoted all her time, energy, and ambition to teaching, encouraging, inspiring him. Then in 1928, their mutual strivings were rewarded, as his works were being chosen as one of the two winners in the Dudensing National Competition for American Painters. Out of 150 artists from across the country participated in the Dudensing, and Michael Posner Baxte and, Robert Fawcett, were the winners. In his 1924 naturalization application, he indicated that he was sometimes known as “Michael Posner Baxte.” One of the witnesses to his application was Bernard Karfiol, a Jewish American artist. That’s when Michael may...
