About the Item
A vivid mid-century impasto figurative cityscape oil painting of New York during the 1940s by Dorothy Rossen Greenberg (American, 1915-2005). A Fishmonger plies his trade amidst a harbor side street scene, amongst the hustle and bustle of the city.
Signed lower right corner "D. Rossen."
Unframed.
Canvas size: 21.5"H x 17"W.
In 1947, Rossen was awarded first prize in sculpture at the Village Art Center, New York City. Winner of the Chi Omega prize in composition, Rossen also exhibited at the Montclair Art Museum where she was awarded an honorable mention in 1952. She also held numerous one-man shows in the late 1940's including at the 44th Street Gallery.
Dorothy Rossen was a member of the National Association of Women Artists and exhibited with them from 1947 to 1953. Her exhibited works at the NAWA for those years were:

\The Ashcan School was a group of early 20th-century American realist painters who focused on documenting everyday life in urban areas, particularly New York City. They rejected the polished academic style of their predecessors and instead embraced a more realistic, gritty, and unglamorized depiction of city life. Key members included Robert Henri, George Bellows, William Glackens, George Luks, Everett Shinn, and John Sloan.

George Schwacha was president of the American Artists Professional League and a past president of the Audubon Artists and Art Center of New Jersey. He belongs to the American Watercolor Society, The National Society of Painters in Casein, and the Philadelphia Watercolor Club. His paintings have been shown throughout the country at museums such as the Pennsylvania Academy, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC and the Birmingham Art Museum, The Butler Art Institute in Youngstown, Ohio the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, as well as in leading New Jersey and New York exhibitions, including the American Society of Arts and Letters. He is listed in Who's Who in American Art and International Directory of Arts.
