About the Item
Pastel on silk by Elizabeth O'Neill Verner. Verner (December 21, 1883 – April 17, 1979) was an artist, author, lecturer, and preservationist who was one of the leaders of the Charleston Renaissance. She has been called "the best-known woman artist of South Carolina of the twentieth century."
She enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where she studied for two years with Thomas Anshutz. When she left the academy, she taught art in Aiken, South Carolina, then returned to Charleston, where she continued her art studies with Gabrielle D. Clements and Ellen Day Hale. She was a founding member of the Charleston Etchers Club and helped to found the Southern States Art League.
Verner became a professional artist after her husband's death in 1925 . Among her clients were Williamsburg Historic District, Harvard Medical School, the United States Military Academy, Princeton University, and the University of South Carolina. Verner made etchings, drypoints, drawings, and (after 1934) pastels of Charleston, favoring buildings, street scenes, and landscapes. She worked at a studio within her residence at 38 Tradd Street. She also became a portraitist known for representing African-Americans, especially the city's flower vendors. Stylistically, her paintings embody realism with impressionist overtones.
The work here is pastel on silk measuring 16" x 12". (Framed 18" x 14") Titled illegibly at the lower left, and signed E O'Neill Verner. Contained within the original frame. Verso, there is an old shipping label that indicates the work was mailed from Verner's 38 Tradd Street address in Charleston, SC to a Mrs Huston B Almond of Chestnut Hill, PA. Mrs Almond, interestingly, because the author of the Peter Rabbit series after Beaxtrix Potter.
The work is in good condition with light foxing of the silk and slaking of the pastel, particularly around the area of the signature and at the margins.
