About the Item

EMIILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 LE MOULIN DE LA GALETTE signed Grau Sala (lower right) oil on canvas 59-1/4 X 67-1/4 inches (150.5 X 170 cm.) framed: 62-1/2 X 70-1/4 inches (158 X 177.5 cm.) Julián Grau Santos, son of the artist and expert on Emilio Grau Sala's work, on a visit to this gallery commented the following: "this painting "Le Moulin de la Galette" is among my father´s two most important paintings". PROVENANCE Private Belgium Collector This work by Emilio Grau Sala entitled "Le Moulin de la Galette" was painted around 1935, when it had not yet been definitively established in Paris, but traveled repeatedly to the city of lovers to enjoy it, until in 1936 he decided to settle in Paris . He paints with some nostalgic taste, the famous café of "Le Moulin de la Galette", where impressionist and post-impressionist artists found themselves in the middle of Montmatre. The artist Toulouse-Lautrec, the father of posterism, can be identified in this work, in the center of the painting. His palette is made in pastel colors and his great female and male figures tell us the relationship between them, their complicity, the meeting place where they were painters, poets, etc. and dressmakers, aspiring prostitutes to model artists and young people with their mothers in search of a boyfriend. This painting is a testimony of a very important Parisian artistic stage and has the flavor of the few works of his first stage in Paris with well-defined and well-interpreted figures, with a very original composition and a pastel palette. Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar Museum, Philadelphia Museum, Museum of Buenos Aires, etc. EXHIBITION Museo de Arte Moderno, Madrid Galería Muller, Buenos Aires Dindley Gallery, New York Outdoor and Autumn Halls, Paris Galería Charpentier, París Monique de Groote, París Sala Parés, Barcelona Sala Rovira, Barcelona Sala Syra, Barcelona

EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 BOULEVARD OF PARIS signed Grau Sala (lower right) oil on canvas 25-1/2 X 32 inches (65 X 81 cm.) framed: 36-1/4 X 42-1/2 inches (92 X 108 cm.) PROVENANCE Sale: Sotheby´s Olympia London, 20 October 2006 Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. In this work Grau Sala has a loose, subtle brushstroke, in which the color shapes the entire work. The bright and transparent whites that give life to young schoolgirls contrast with the brushstrokes of blacks from the nun who accompanies them. The explosion of greens is refreshing, it surrounds us and transports us to an idyllic place, even if it is a citizen boulevard, which becomes friendly and beautiful. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...

PROVENANCE Private Collection, Barcelona, Spain Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in "Sala Parés", Barcelona. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents. In the years 1930-33 he had painted under the influence of Cubism, especially that of Torres García. It is from that time a painting of the port of Barcelona, geometric and structural, which completely anticipated what would later be his work. His personality began fully painting watercolors and oils with a certain fantasy character, with a point of decorative instinct and themes full of naivety and grace. Romantic interiors, paddocks, port scenes, sailors, etc. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. Mediterranean because his work has the color and light of that land. He understood and assimilated impressionist painting very well, and for that reason he was never subject to the modules of a formulist realism, nor the sexigencias of the forms. In Paris he found the best environment to give us a fruitful and intense work, because he could use the expressive potential of French art to enrich it. All this made him a very esteemed artist everywhere where his work was known. He was also very often required to illustrate books and publications in Paris. Also his posters were very successful. He painted a large number of subjects, but perhaps the theme of horse racing is where you can see in a very clear way the joyful and optimistic life that was lived at that time. In this fabric there is an explosion of juicy and vivid colors full of ingenuity and simplicity in its composition. Only a teacher could turn the complicated into something simple and beautiful. Before this work we feel a deep emotion, the emotion of before starting a horse race. Joy and nervousness at the same time. Especially since it is a direct emotion. There are no intermediaries between our eyes and what the work intends to tell us. This is precisely what seduces and catches us of this painting. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum...

"La Place au Bistro des Filles", Gerard Valtier, Acrylic on Board, French
By Gerard Valtier
Located in Dallas, TX
"La Place au Bistro des Filles" by Gerard Valtier is an original oil on canvas that measures 35x46 inches. The bright colors of this impressionistic painting create a lively evening scene of people walking and dancing outside of the shops along a canal. Empty gondola's float on the water, lit by the street lamps. Many appreciate the energetic work of the brush to describe the foliage or the luminous backgrounds irradiated with numerous vibrant colors. Seething with colors, sparkling, blazing, molten gold: the whole mystery of Gerard Valtier’s painting lies in the working of this colorful living chemistry, where the thickening cover of the glaze catches the reflections of the light, which progressively becomes incandescent. The contrasting blue and yellow, basically naturalistic colors - characteristic of the impressionist palette - create a feeling of bedazzlement which send out their own light, directly imitating the natural effects of light itself. Thus, the property of the color, the interaction of colors as well as their power to create some light, definitely are the basis of Valtier’s work. The artist can paint everything: barges along the quay, the busy crowds, Venice and its carnival, the bride and her procession - his whole painting is under the sign of the feast. Unlike Renoir or Cezanne, Valtier does not hesitate to use black as a true color, not one designed to soften or drain the pure color, as in the shadows. One will also appreciate the energetic work of the brush to describe the foliage or the luminous backgrounds irradiated with numerous vibrant colors. Valtier has had exhibitions throughout the world and has received many awards. He paints from his studio in Arles, France. He is listed in Mayers, Akoun, La Cote des Peinteres, Bordas International, and Financial Art.
