Description:
In this charming urban study by French artist Fanch Lel, a group of figures stroll through a historic town square, surrounded by characterful half-timbered houses and steep, slate-covered rooftops. The angular buildings, rendered in Lel’s bold brushwork and softened pastel tones, suggest a traditional French village—possibly in Normandy or Alsace—known for its medieval architecture and cobbled streets.
The figures are loosely painted, adding a sense of movement and daily life to the scene, while the sharp triangular rooftops and chimneys echo upward, drawing the eye toward the sky. A gentle interplay of shadow and light animates the ground, hinting at a sunny afternoon and adding dimension to the street.
Lel's painterly technique captures both the spirit of the place and the casual rhythm of village life. His ability to evoke atmosphere with gestural strokes and selective detail makes this a compelling piece for collectors of French Impressionism and lovers of European architecture. This work would sit beautifully in a contemporary or rustic interior, offering a glimpse into a peaceful day in a historic French town.

Fanch Lel
Fanch Lel’s paintings, primarily executed in oil and gouache, evoke the serenity and charm of the French countryside, with a particular emphasis on the region's coastal and rural beauty. His works often highlight iconic landmarks such as Mont Saint-Michel and capture the essence of Breton culture with his portrayals of the region’s people and customs. Lel's self-taught, plein air approach allows for dynamic compositions that reflect the atmospheric light and textures of the region, giving his pieces a timeless appeal. His choice of soft, muted colors and rich textures brings a sense of nostalgia and quietude to each painting, making them a perfect addition to collections that appreciate mid-century French art. A member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants and a Knight of the Palmes Académiques, Fanch Lel's works have been featured in numerous exhibitions across France, including in Paris, Avranches, Dinard, and Pont-Aven, to name a few. His art has been highly sought after by collectors for decades.

Townscape oil painting of Semur, France

Letitia Marion Hamilton

Gateway, Semur
Oil on canvas, signed, inscribed on verso 'Gateway, Semur by Letitia Marion Hamilton of Fonthill Palmerstown, Dublin’
Image size: 24 inches x 20 inches
Size including frame: 33 inches x 29 inches
A lovely painting of the town of Semur-en-Auxois, France by Letitia Marion Hamilton. The work with its airy lightness shows figures outside a grocers shop next to the Guillier Gate showing a glimpse of the central square of the famous medieval town. The use of white pigment in her colours applied in a thick impasto was a trademark of her work.
Letitia Marion Hamilton was born in Dunboyne, County Meath on 30 July, 1878, the daughter of Charles Hamilton and Louisa Brooke. She came from a family of famous Irish women artists: her great-grandmother was Caroline Hamilton (1771-1861), her elder sister Eva Hamilton (1876-1960) was also a talented painter, and her cousin Rose Maynard Barton (1856-1929) was a townscape and watercolour artist. The family lived at Hamwood, Dunboyne, Meath in Ireland.
She trained at the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin alongside her sister Eva under Sir William Orpen (1878-1939) before attending the Slade School of Art where she was taught by Sir Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956). She made her debut at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1909 where she continued to exhibit regularly. In 1912, she was awarded a silver medal by the Dublin school and received another from the Board of Education National Competition.
After the death of her father in 1913, she and her family moved to 40 Lower Dominick Street in Dublin, later living at Monasterevin, in Co. Kildare. By 1920, they had relocated to Font Hill in Palmerstown, Dublin. In the same year, Hamilton formed the Society of Dublin Painters together with Paul Henry, his wife Emily Grace Mitchell...
