About the Item
During the renaissance period artists turned towards the nostalgia and
glorification of classical antiquity, Kopacsi, too, uses an ancient subject as a starting point for her creation: Venus.
From goddesses, warriors and muses, to sinner, subordinate and hysterical, the concept of an ‘ideal woman’ has been constantly changing, yet remains an eternal struggle.
The co-presence of two antithetical concepts: birth & death, harmony & chaos, good & evil contrasting in a declining world where appearance is glorified.
This work presents a sculptural composition where a bundle of black recycled fabric emerges from a vertically oriented canvas, painted in desaturated tones with subtle linear textures. The fabric, cinched and folded into a central, almost garment-like form, introduces a visceral tension between softness and structure, permanence and collapse.
The material contrast—between the rigid geometry of the canvas and the organic, unruly folds of fabric—creates a sense of movement arrested in time. The use of black spray paint unifies the textile form while amplifying its shadow-like presence, evoking themes of absence, memory, and bodily trace. Meanwhile, the acrylic background, marked by drips and textured lines, echoes architectural surfaces or worn walls, suggesting layers of erosion or erasure.
This piece situates itself at the intersection of painting and assemblage, using discarded materials to explore questions of identity, transformation, and the imprint of the human body on matter.
