About the Item
The Sea As a Wall is a monochromatic piece by Chilean artist Franco Salas Borquez, created using mixed media (quartz sand, marble powder and binders) and featuring a deep blue patina. Dimensions are 31 x 41 cm (12.2 x 16.14 in).
This piece is sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
Straddling the line between relief painting and wall sculpture, this artwork is shaped more through a sculptural process than traditional painting. Working with marble powder, the artist applies the material directly with his fingers, making each gesture a visible trace of movement. The mixture dries rapidly, encouraging a balance of focus and instinct in the creative act.
Although Franco Salas Borquez is known for his symbolic depictions of the sea in oil, he also explores other techniques—using pencil, ink, or marble powder to recreate the fluid, hypnotic quality of ocean waves. With a method that is both intuitive and precise, he captures the sea’s dynamic essence, resulting in artworks that evoke the meditative experience of observing nature.
Rather than painting from direct observation, the artist draws from a mental archive of maritime imagery, allowing for spontaneity in his process. His paintings convey emotion, which is often underscored by the poetic titles he gives them. These titles introduce a literary layer to the work, opening space for narrative and reflection through the use of a restrained palette and carefully modulated light.

Franco Salas Borquez
Franco Salas Borquez’works depict the sea, the sole subject of his paintings. The artist paints the waves using an intuitive but rigorous hand to achieve the same degree of fluidity as the sea. Thus, his artworks, thanks to the effect of realism, reproduce the same sensation that comes from contemplating nature. His works are now exhibited in museums collections and in numerous international galleries and fairs. He received an award from Spain’s Institute for Maritime History and Culture in 2010, and another one from the Paris Marine Museum in 2011 and 2014. “The sea is ultimately a fairly limited subject, but I like to play with these limits, it fascinates me. It’s like a game of chess where the board has 24 pieces, but there are infinite possibilities of combinations.”

Her works have been in the past approached to the works of Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) and Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1770), but in Gullotta's paintings the absence of color makes the spaces particularly ethereal, allowing them to be ideally lifted to new places and to new life.
We often speak of a "brain drain," but in this case we are truly happy to be able to say that this is a "return," and an important one: an artist of international caliber who has decided to entrust her return to her homeland to Almach Art...
