About the Item

This painting of a bartender waiting for an order is an unusual composition for Fred Machetanz, who is known for his scenes of Alaska. It has been speculated that this was likely commissioned. Machetanz is known as a colorist, and this painting employs the technique of preparing the canvas with ultramarine blue underpaint followed by linseed oil glazes that achieve a luminosity. It is presented in an ornate gilt frame. Signed and dated lower right At 27 years old, Fred Machetanz traveled from Ohio to Alaska to visit his uncle, who ran a trading post in Unalakleet. This visit lasted two years and was the start of an acclaimed career as an artist and a life intertwined with Alaska. When he left Alaska after this initial visit, he had a portfolio of Alaskan scenes and a job in New York as an illustrator. During World War II, he returned to Alaska by requesting a post in the Aleutian Islands. After the war, he again returned to New York, this time to study lithography under Will Barnet at the Art Students League. It was eleven years after that first visit in 1946 that he settled for good in Alaska and became known for the work he produced there. Machetanz is known as a strong colorist and often prepared his surfaces with layers of ultramarine blue base using a large brush. He then applied a transparent oil glazing technique to build up layers of color and form. This cool, luminous quality reflected the Alaskan environment and referenced techniques used by artists such as Maxfield Parrish.
