Description of the Artwork
This painting captures a lively Haitian market scene, embodying the essence of Haitian primitivist art with its vibrant colors and thick impasto brushstrokes. The scene depicts a bustling marketplace where vendors and buyers interact, surrounded by piles of tropical fruits arranged in baskets. The figures are dressed in bright, contrasting tones, enhancing the painting’s dynamic and energetic atmosphere.
The artist’s expressive, thick strokes and saturated colors create a sense of movement and liveliness. The composition is carefully balanced, with figures arranged in different planes, providing depth and perspective in an intuitive manner. The lush vegetation in the background and the bright blue sky add further context to the scene, situating it in the Caribbean setting.
Haitian art, influenced by its African and Caribbean heritage, is known for its naïve style and depictions of everyday life. JM Gary Delly follows this tradition, celebrating the vibrancy of Haitian culture in his work.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
In Ibiza Market, Ignacio Gil Sala transports us to a traditional Mediterranean island scene, likely set in the 1950s or 60s. Women with brightly colored scarves, children, fruit, and woven baskets fill a lively open space under improvised awnings, where sunlight filters through with vibrant intensity.
The artist skillfully and emotively captures the bustle of market day, using a rich palette of earth tones, blues, and yellows applied with loose, impasto brushstrokes that convey both motion and warmth. His focus on the human and the everyday reveals Gil Sala’s poetic interest in documenting the essence of popular life.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Ignacio Gil Sala (Barcelona, 1913 – 2003) was a prominent Spanish Post-Impressionist painter, celebrated for his treatment of Mediterranean light and his sensitivity in portraying genre scenes. Trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, he was awarded the Silver Medal in 1930 and received a grant in 1936 to travel throughout Spain, supported by the sculptor Mariano Benlliure.
His work includes landscapes, seascapes, portraits, and urban scenes, all depicted with a lively, honest, and direct gaze. His compositions exhibit strong draftsmanship and a free brushstroke, echoing the legacy of the Valencian luminist school. Ibiza was one of his recurring sources of inspiration, as this painting attests.
He received numerous awards, including:
Silver Medal from the School of Fine Arts (1930)
First Medal at the International Exhibition of Palma de Mallorca (1941)
Prizes at the African Painters...
